So I'm teaching at 2 rural elementary schools in Chungnam, been here since April and things have been going pretty smoothly except that at my "main" school the teachers keep canceling my classes. Now I don't have a real co-teacher at this school, I just go into the classroom and teach "with" whoever is the teacher for that grade. I also don't really mind the fact that they're canceling my classes since I'm getting paid regardless...but the thing is I spend most of my day in the English classroom bs'ing online and I'm pretty sure I look super-lazy to the other teachers...so my questions is what's a good way to look like I'm working hard rather than hardly working...even if there's not any actual work to be done?

Don't smile too much. Look frustrated and shuffle papers around every once in a while.

Try doing something

theres always

lesson plans to write,
tests to make,
actvities to make,
additional flashcards to make,
student games to invent,
English festival (school festival) to prepare for,
open classes to prepare for...

If your school is not doing these things then thats poor.

Yeah. The George Castanza method. Look angry and shuffle papers.

Or, do what half of my Korean co-workers do. Pile up books and papers 3 feet high on your desk so that you look swamped. I don't know if Korean bosses are actually fooled by this, but, as usual in Korea, it's all about appearances.

Sighs and groans are also your friend.

"Wow, did you hear the groan on Bronski? That guy must be swamped!"

Photocopy copiously as that indicates you've completed something.....then leave your jacket on your chair and have a long lunch.

I disagree, to be honest. Even if you do all these things, I find that there is still a huge chunk of time left in the day, especially since I do a lot of lesson planning at home/all at once.

I've stopped even putting up the pretense of appearing busy. I know my co-workers gossip about it. But, if it wasn't that, it would be something else. Study Korean, that always looks good. Or if you aren't into that study history or econ on English lit or something. There are million free courses from top unis available online. At least you can chalk that up to "professional development".

There really isnt a point to looking busy. You have nothing to do so don't do anything. I play computer games and watch tv. No one cares, as long as you do a good job in class and are prepared there really is no point to looking busy. Don't stress yourself out over nothing.

Troll the internet. Create multiple user names like

A Muslim Fundamentalist calling for Jihad against the infidel

A right wing nut who wants to Nuke Mekka.

A militant Vegetarian Tree Hugger

A gay black Muslim member of The Nation of Islam.

Go on a public political discussion forum and flame people it's a lot of fun.

You do realise this entire site has less than 5 real members and the rest are the sock of the same guy, right?
