This morning, my Korean co-teacher requested that I disassociate from, and stop mingling with any other foreigners, & implicitly requested that I not leave Korea, during my Summer Vacation. When I mentioned, "oh, do you mean H1N1 (Swine Flu)?, my co-teacher said no, this is a new type of flu. Is anyone else getting this, at their school? It just seems like paranoia to me.
A quick google search found nothing conclusive. Is this a new strain of Swine flu? |

I edited a test for my school. One of the test questions was on Swine Flu. Read the dialogue, answer the multiple choice questions. The dialogue stated that the World Health Organization released a statement that Korea's problems with SI are due to an influx of foreigners.
Yet again the dirty foreigner is responsible. Let's teach our children this so the racism can continue.
Heaven forbid that SI spread in Korea after Koreans returned from their vacations. |

To be fair the first big influx was due to a new teacher and should be well known on this board. There were only 5 cases before she arrived, but didn't it quickly rise to something like 30 a couple days later because she went to an orientation and was exposed to 100s of people. |

My GF also told me that a Korean man went to japan for a few days with the family, came back, and after a week started showing signs of H1N1. Their entire family was infected, and a lot of the people they interacted with as well. |

That's true. It's the influx of foreigners. Why are you editing it? And how is this racism? I didn't know foreigners were classified as a race.
They're asking foreign ESL tutors who frequently travel outside of the country to not risk being affected. Since the tutors interact with school children, minimizing the risk is the main concern. This probably wouldn't happen with a Korean teacher because most of them don't vacation outside of Korea and don't interact with people who may have traveled abroad, especially now with the swine flu.
If you believe the school's request is too "racist," then you can always go back to your country. You don't have to be here. It's not like you're an immigrant who settled here. You're a temporary visitor. |

It's discrimination if only non-Koreans are being quarantined. Koreans visit the US, Canada etc...Are they not just as likely to contract the virus?
The World Health Organization would never issue such a statement. It was made up by some teacher. There was no "influx" of foreigners: just the usual comings and goings.
The "request" to have me edit was not racist. The question was. Does logic always elude you?
xenophobia, racism, discrimination. Choose the word you like best. |
