My V43 died. It was good while it lasted, but the customer service was shit.

I take the bus to and from work everyday, so I need something to take my mind off the travel.

I was looking at an ipod touch and other pmps, until i thought of a netbook as a possible alternative in the same price range.

Should I go PMP or Netbook?
Specific brand?

Help a brother out.

as small as a netbook is , it isn't as portable as an ipod touch.. so if you want really portable pick that.

Yeah, I agree if you value portability and entertainment I would say an itouch is what your looking for.

You can easily put it in your pocket, play games, read books/news/magazines, and more. (not to mention movies and music)

I could see how a netbook would be more practical if you were doing lots of word processing on the go. But with the itouch you can still do basic word processing and you can easily read about any file.

Couple of free apps to get you started:
stanza
ap news
new york times
checkers
chess
paper toss
lux touch
light bike

And there are tons of other apps, most either free or under 5 bucks.

I also need access to the internet (I supplement my income through online sports books). As far as portability, I carry a messenger back with me every where I go so a small netbook wont hamper me too much. I dont expect to be doing any word processing.

Mostly need it for movies, internet, music and a little notetaking (sports statistics).

Can the ipod touch give me this or any other pmp? That was one of the reason that I would consider a netbook.

How easily accessible is it in Korea and can I search any site? For ex. my haptic phone has internet access, but its only limited to specific sites. How much extra do I have to pay for internet service?

You can get on any wifi spot. Many coffee shops, malls, random businesses have wifi. It costs whatever it costs for the access at that point. If you're using for pay hotspots then you'll have to pay for those. If you're using open wifi spots it costs nothing.

Do you have a wifi network at home? If not they are extremely easy to set up, just buy a wifi router.

You can download content from the web at home using various programs, then read them when you don't have access to wifi (like while on a bus).

Here is a quick walk through of what the internet is like on the iphone/itouch:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3gs/safari.html#video

I've browsed the web on both a 9'' netbook and a itouch, and I have to say I find the itouch a more enjoyable experience for browsing the web on the go. It's screen optimization is extremely useful and the touch screen becomes like second nature and is very responsive.

A 32GB iTouch is good, but pricey.

Another Korean PMP? The Cowon O2 does video and audio as well as, or better, than the iTouch for almost 200,000 less. But, of course, no wifi with the Cowon.

Although, it will play all common video and audio files, including x264, without conversion or software. Just drag and drop form your PC. So it has a big jump on the iTouch there.

Good link here comparing Cowon 02 with iTouch.

At the moment, the portable media player market is split between those with wifi and those without.

You have to choose if you want wifi.

Edit: Sorry. I didn't read the OP's 2nd post fully. So you want wifi......then it's the pricey iTouch or a netbook. I don't think the Korean PMP's with wifi are worth looking at.

Personally, I don't need the ultra-portability of the iTouch. As cool and multi-functional as they are, they still can't do all that a netbook can do. I'm happy to carry something about 2lbs in my bag and have more functionality and a more enjoyable screen-size.

I'd say netbook.

The 32 GB is pretty unnecessary depending on what you want to do with it.
If you have gigs and gigs of music you must take around with you, then okay. But 400 pictures takes up around 300 MBs (those were from a 10 MP JPG sync, I'm sure you could cut that down) 3 dozen apps takes up around 100 mb. The only time I really use up space is when I drop a show on there to watch on the go. You can get an 8 GB for around 350,000 on gmarket I think. Maybe less.

^ It all depends on your listening/viewing habits.

I've got a 16GB Cowon S9 and I often feel the lack of space. 32Gb would be a lot more comfortable.

It depends how often you want to swap stuff in and out. I don't like to do it more than once a week.

But if you're willing to swap stuff in and out quite often, then, yeah, you could live with 8GB. Not me, though.

Plus, if it's an itouch, you maybe have to do all that conversion rigmarole every time you're transferring. Too much effort. I've got used to just spending 20 minutes per week transferring what I want to watch or listen to in the next 7 days.

anyone know what the battery life of netbooks are?

16 gb itouch and netbooks are pretty simialr in price about 500,000.

Netbook has a bigger screen, much larger HD and is probably faster.

Touch is more portable and likely a better A/S package.
Do you really need to convert everything to use on the itouch?

More input.

Thanks, eamo that was some good stuff. Ya might have swayed me back to the netbook.

I have an Asus 1000HE and it is said to have 9.5hrs on one charge. I would say from personal experience that the battery life is exceptionally good, maybe 7hrs, but definitely not 9.5hrs. It's supposed to be the best in the business for netbooks.

I was looking at either the Acer , Asus or Dell.

Did you buy the ASUS in Korea and is it in english?
