|
I was interviewed by the Chosun Ilbo for the online edition some two weeks ago or more and was told that the interview would appear around the Lunar New Year. It didn't come out until today (the person from the paper said it was on 'hold' for some unknown reason), but when it did the visitors to my page rose from
56 two days ago,
106 yesterday,
1713 so far today.
I've been answering messages to people that visited my page for some three hours now.
They all said that they felt inspired to study languages again after reading the page, which was nice.
Another person keeps coming on and posting long pieces on Korean history, some of which I didn't like, over-nationalistic stuff. I may try to block him.
Another person came on and just wrote 'idiot'. I let that one be.
Some other people saw the thread on this cafe on Korea during the Japanese occupation and had their say on the opinions of some on the board. All in Korean though. One guy has posted some seven times now on dokdo and whatever else.
And thanks to everyone who uses the page to learn Korean, especially Shakuhachi who posted a question in pretty good Korean on the message board. |

There it is:

Can't say I like the picture, I look too sleepy, but I'm not complaining. Quite funny how I got the interview in the first place. I emailed a reporter from there telling me she could interview me if she wanted. She said yes, and that's how it happened.

Jaurim, eh? I agree, learning a language through songs as well as tv, magazines, entertainment in general is fun and probably the simplest. And I must say, knowing that much hanja is impressive. "Don't study alone" - starbucks is really addictive, personally I wouldn't go there. Good advice, good luck! |

Hello David,
I also am a proud learner of Korean. I can write, read, type and speak Korean fluently. I lived in Korea for one year and I plan on going back again this year after I find a job which suits me. After reading the article from the ChoSun IlBo about how you learned Korean, it is very similiar to how I learned Korean, so I believe this is a very effective way to learn a foriegn language. Instead of listening to the groups you listened to, I listened to over and over again to the exciting sounds SES and FINKL.
I am a Christian and through listening to sermons and talking with fellow church members, my ability in Korean became better through that experience. I really have desire to understand the bible in Korean and I thank God for all the people that I have met who helped me spiritually and with Korean related questions I have had during my time learning.
In any case, there is also an article about me in the HanGuk IlBo. This is the LA branch and the article is in Korean targeting Koreans in Southern California. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in the pursuit of understanding cultures and appreciating others as well. I really do believe your ability in all of these languages is very commendable! I know you are doing it because you enjoy it which is really great!

Obviously I can't read most of your site. What part of content do you think this person was objecting to? |

I say you block both of them lest your homepage become a sub-spam garbage pail.
You know in America they always print these rants by right wing nutsos. They print them even though they say the same thing again and again, and they recycle the same cliches. Partly they print them because the right wing in America is so power and frightening but also they believe that by printing the letters they will appease them.
Anyway, I say you liquidate both of them, no one will miss them. |

The guy that said idiot just left it at that. I could delete it but it seems pretty innocent. The other guy keeps posting his own stuff and I've been deleting most of it...
Carcerate, you seem quite interesting...I was reminded of something I saw in the paper a week ago, a tiny bit way back about a guy from India who got his whole Ph.D in Korea at Yonsei; apparently he was the first foreigner even to get a 100% Korean Ph.D or something of the sort. Too bad it was such a short article.
I don't know about an English version, as I'm not sure how Chosun Ilbo works. I doubt it would be as interesting to an English-speaking audience though...
And lastly as for what I'm doing in Korea, that's still a secret! Because I'm not finished yet... |
