So TODAY my coteacher let me know that my principal may or may not let me go on my summer trip, which is TOMORROW.

If he doesn't sign some paper and let me go and I go anyway, what will happen?

She says if I get swine flu I'm automatically fired, but swine flu is pretty rare, right?

I'm going to Bali, and I teach public elementary through GEPIK, if it matters.

Edit: So he did actually sign the thing and let me go, but the whole process was a bigass headache this morning.

Why would he even know? Just leave and come back when you are supposed to.

If anyone asks, just tell them you stayed in Korea the whole time.

There won't be any notice on any of my records if I leave the country?

They've been notified of your vacation. You take it. Period.

Honestly, people.... get some balls. It's a lot harder to replace you than it is to put up with you going away for a contractual vacation period.

There are other jobs to be had in this country. If they fired you over taking your rightful vacation, you can get a month extra paid from the labor board, plus find another job.

Tell your "boss" you're taking your vacation, and that's final.

Why do you even continue to work there, or worry about staying?

I'd tell them right to their face that if they fired you over swine flu, prepare to deal with the labor board. There is no precedent or such a thing, and if they did fire you, THEY WOULD LOSE. Besides, swine flu has been recognized as within Korea anyway. You could catch it on the subway, for gosh sakes.

Politely tell her you will be taking your vacation ... period.

He can't really stop you from going, but if he finds out after the fact he may try to make your life difficult.

Do you have a multiple entry permit on your visa? If so, you're good to go, as they say.

Tell the pin head to buzz off. As much as I like Korea this power-control of the foreigner thing is what really pees me off. Anyone who doesn't go on vacation because their pin head principle doesn't sign a peice of paper deserves what they get, that's not meant for you OP. Show him your contract with the Korean translation and buy him a hula skirt in Bali, maybe he'll grow a pair by the time you get back.

Have fun and forget your worthless school.

Suerte,

Jesse

I'm a little confused. Why would I get a month extra paid from the labor board if I'm fired?

Even if you don't have a multiple-entry permit, you can buy one at the airport as you go through immigration.

There will be a stamp on your passport.

But your principal does NOT have the right to tell you where you can go on your off-time.

And Immigration and GEPIK are not linked.

I work at a HS

I just told my English speaking VP about how many elementary schools are prohibiting (or trying) their NET's from taking vacations because of the swine flu scare.

I said - if someone told me Epicurus you can't go..
my answer would be - "bye"

He laughed.

yes, I have a cool VP.

It's so he can get off on a power trip. Some Korean's feed on it like their addicts. Really a shame because these few Koreans really spoil it for the rest and give the country the negative attention and unfortunately overshadows most good that it offers.
