According to a friend of mine who works at a KB banks, they are now issuing international debit cards to foreigners as of yesterday (July 21st).

I just went into the bank and after much confusion, they more or less confirmed this new policy. They had to call around a bunch of places (I'm assuming because they weren't really 100% sure about the ins-and-outs themselves) and made me fill about a bunch of forms (all of which were in English).

They basically said that as long as I am a resident of Korea, this card can be used internationally. They did not give me a new card, they just updated some information on the computer. The whole process took about 30 minutes.

The one thing that got me was at the very end. The teller informed me that we had done all the paper work, but without actually trying it abroad there is no way to know for sure if it would work. So... will it work or not?

Has anyone else heard about this? Go to KB today and try to get an international debit card!

Very Happy

I'll see if I can get it done today, and try it in the Philippines when I get there on Saturday and report back.

Yeah let us know if it's worth the time and trouble to open an account with them. Also, OP if your friend could please link or cite the new rule in Korean, it would help us to be able to show the tellers.

Thanks

F**K KB. I'll never go back to those idiots again.

I needed a new bankbook as mine was full. I brought everything needed to the counter, ARC and Passport, and it went a little something like this:

KB: This passport number is different than the one we have on file.
Me: Yes, I renewed it last month. It's a new passport.
KB: We need to see the original passport with which this account was opened.
Me: .... Not possible - my government has possession of it. When we renew passports, our government keeps the old ones.
KB: We can't issue you another bankbook unless you can produce this passport.
Me: ........

So I asked them right there to transfer all my savings to my KEB account. They wouldn't as, again, I didn't have the matching passport. I take my card, go to the ATM, and do it myself.. then take the receipt back up to the counter, show them the new balance of zero, and say "Congratulations on loosing my business" (not that they cared I'm sure).

Sh*t-heads.
