| 22.6. I'm 1m 82cm tall and weigh 75kg....I've bulked up considerably in Korea and now that I'm back in the UK on holiday everybody's mentioned how much healthier and better I look than before I went to Korea (funnily enough the exact opposite to what the teachers and kids at my school say to me back in Suwon....thin is definitely in in the ROK). |

How do you find out your body fat, as that's supposed to be a better indication of health isn't it?
I mean, you could be your ideal BMI yet still have a terrible jelly belly. |

| Does anyone really think the BMI has any merit? |

I have long since refrained from commenting on most medical and health related topics on the internet, especially here at Dave's. Thus I wont waste time responding to contrarians. But I will answer this question. Yes, it has a great deal of merit. As was mentioned MANY times before, for the few outliers it may not accurately reflect their health status. Actually, weight is seldom a good indicator of total health.
If I worked in a gym where muscle mass is goal for many of the customers, its useless. However, as a clinical registered dietitian (R.D), I know that 99.9% of my patients walking through the door will be of a normal lean muscle mass and that fat (or fluid status) will likely be the variable. If the nurse hands me a chart and I see the BMI is 28, its a darn good bet a body builder will not be walking through my door. BMI a calculation that can be used to make helpful Blink type evaluations until the full assessment and recommendations can be fulfilled which might include hip, waist, shoulder type comparisons or even body fat %. Judging from some of the comments on this site, BMI seems to be a fair indication of weight status. For others, it does not work. BMI was never meant to be used to as a be-all, end-all evaluation. The general public has taken it there however, and may not know what to make of it. Actually, when thinking about research finding, medical nutrition advice, and other areas, thats usually what happens.
