I'm looking for
"The Aquariums of Pyongyang: 10 Years in the North Korean Gulag" by Kang Chol Hwan
and
"Escape to the Outside World: From Total Control Prison Camp No. 14 in North Korea" by Shin Dong Hyuk
I'd like to buy several copies of each in English (for my English speaking friends) and in Korean (for my Korean speaking friends).
Does anyone know a good place to get these? (I live in Seoul).
Also, if anyone else knows of anymore books about North Korean gulugs, I'd be interested in checking those out as well.
(The aforementioned titles are the only memoirs about life in the prisons of which I am aware). |

I have 신동혁's 세상 밖으로 나오다 right here. It was from the original run of 3000 copies. Are they selling it in English now or something? (Edit: I don't know where you can buy it, try gmarket... I had my boss get me this one. And three others from the same run. Two of those I wrapped separately in newspaper and sent home to myself so I can sell them when they make the film starring Brad Pitt somehow. ㅋㅋ.) |

I bought mine at the bookstore at Central City (Express Bus Terminal). I'm sure you could also find it pretty easily at Kyobo Bookstore in Gangnam or Bandi and Luni's at the Coex Mall (Samseong Station). |

What The Book? in Itaewon has had those two titles, and a lot of copies too, basically every time I've set foot in the store for quite some time. Last I checked, their prices were generally lower than the big guys (Kyobo, Youngpoong, Bandi & Luni's, etc.) as well. |

I just got back from 'What the Book?'. From talking to the sales clerk, I got the impression that they never carried 'Escape to the Outside World'. Perhaps it has never been translated into English? ('What the Book' has mostly English books). As for Aquariums of Pyongyang, they said they could order it for me, but that it would take 4-8 weeks to come in. Major bummer on that, but it's a good store so thanks for recommending it to me. I got 10 used books for 71,000 Won!
BTW, everyone, how would I ask for 'The Aquariums of Pyongyang' in Korean if I wanted a Korean text copy? Is this correct? 평양의 수족관
