The New York Times reports that former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was in close contact with Goldman Sachs (GS) executives during critical periods of the financial crisis. Did he cross the line? An ethics probe will determine whether his treatment of the investment bank, which he previously ran, was acceptable. According to the Times, "During the week of the A.I.G. (AIG) bailout alone, Mr. Paulson and Mr. Blankfein spoke two dozen times, the calendars show, far more frequently than Mr. Paulson did with other Wall Street executives." Fueling suspicions that the firm got special treatment is the fact that after getting $10 billion in TARP funds, Goldman has rebounded more robustly than any of its rivals.

More is coming out from this story. Cheney - Haliburton connection is small fries compared to this, if it turns out to be true.

Here is the NY Times article

But today, seven months after Mr. Paulson left office, questions are still being asked about his part in decisions last fall to prop up the teetering financial system with tens of billions of taxpayer dollars, including aid that directly benefited his former firm. Testifying on Capitol Hill last month, he was grilled about his relationship with Goldman.
