There's a significant case to be made against India. Why I am Not a Hindu by Kancha Illaiah makes this case very well. I think any society constructed in the image of decidedly smelly concepts such as reincarnation and Karma will inevitably contain gross indecencies of mammoth dimensions. India's democracy and vibrant culture presents a superficially pleasing appearance - underneath being a horribly cruel and inhumane society.

True enough, and it's not news to me. However, India is home to many a rationalist and nonbeliever who wouldn't have a chance in Pakistan or Iran, and many a political dissenter who wouldn't have a chance in Beijing. It is a success as a pluralist secular democracy in the context of its region, and a valuable ally as such.

Yes, the gov't does some terrible stuff abroad, I agree. I don't think that merits punishing the people of China by breaking them up in a replay of colonial history.

Eh. The minorities get preferential access to universities and exemptions from the One Child Policy. There's only two out of fifty some minorities that have regular problems with Beijing. So yes, the national gov't is a horrible bully to two of its fifty many ethnic minorities.

Anyway, advocating breaking up China is not a new thing. Just look back to the treaty days of China. Its colonialism and it didn't help China's development. Meanwhile, Beijing, for all its political horrors, have given economic hope and promise to its people. So while I oppose the central gov't I also support a central national China.

I agree with you that China proper should not be broken up, but the Chinese empire should be. They have no right to be in Tibet or Xinjiang.

I wish only good things for the Chinese people, but only vicious, nasty, humiliating things for their oppressive, corrupt government.

Yeah, pretty much. A lot of local gov'ts in China are just as bad, if not worse, than Beijing central, so breaking up China would be a really bad event for 1.3 billion.
