I'm going to Seoul to studay at Sogang for one semester without a visa. Sogang as well as the consulate told me I don't need one as I am from Canada. Depending on my funds I may continue to study or get a job and fly back to Canada to do the paperwork. Therefore I'm nto sure when I will come back.
THe problem is I have a one-way ticket. Will they let me on the plane or in the country if I don't have a return ticket? Will bring a bank statement showing my savings help? Or am I screwed?
Thanks.

But wait awhile for others to post, I don't want to discourage you. My post was based on reading other people's experiences - not my own. I've never been in that position. Have you called them and asked? It might be worth a shot. |

Canadian tourist visa is good for 6 months. For the love of God, Allah, Buddah, the goddess, Mother Earth, etc. DO NOT WORK WITHOUT A PROPER VISA.
Anyway, it depends on the immigration officer at the airport. Technically, if they ask for your return ticket, and you don't have one, they can turn you around and send you back. But, will they ask for your return ticket is the question. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
Here is what it says:
Quote: |
nationals of most countries, travelling for short-term touristic or transit purposes, are allowed to enter visa-free for a maximum duration of 30 days, provided holding confirmed onward or return tickets and proof of sufficient funds. This regulation applies to: Albania, Argentina, Australia (90 days), Brunei, Canada (6 months), |
For the record, I've never seen them ask for proof of funds at the airport, but I have seen them ask for return tickets. Actually, the airline usually asks for the return tickets in your home country, because they know if Korea rejects you, they have to pay to bring you back. On a tourist visa, I have ALWAYS been checked in my home country for my return ticket. Not always once I got where I was going, but definately before I left. |

they may let u on the plane. but they may not let u in the country once u land.
im pretty sure one stipulation to getting any visa is having "a return or onward ticket"... u might want to book a return flight now asap! |

Well im 100% sure theyll let you on the plane. Chances of you passing immigration in korea is pretty slim. Everytime ive gone through they ask to see my return ticket. |

Well Misher, you have people who always get checked before they get on the plane, and someone who always gets checked when they get off the plane.
So, your chances are looking...... what's another word for 0? LOL, sorry, just teasing.
Serious, book a refundable ticket. Then, when you get to Korea, either cash it in or just hang on to it because eventually, you will need it. |

When I went to Thailand from Korea on a return ticket at the end of my previous contract, I wasn't asked by Thai Aiport immigration to produce my return ticket when I entered.
Upon leaving Thailand for Korea, I was asked at Thai Air check-in to provide my onward ticket from Korea.
On my arrival back into Korea I wasn't asked by the Incheon Immigration Officer any questions about an onward ticket or anything to that matter.
So, you can be sure to be asked questions at check-in and possibly at airport immigration. However, It's just not worth it to take the risk though. |

Yeah.... The airline checkin tried to stop me the last time I flew to Korea from Detroit- had to whip out my passport's E2 visa to prove to her I was actually legal.... she let me through, though not sure if she believed me fully... |

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm booking a return ticky right now (ICN to YVR then back). So much cheaper to fly in november. I'm paying less than my one-way in augaust! I'm not risking anything
Thanks all

Your E-2 is your proof of employment, and yes, then you wouldn't need a return ticket. The return ticket is only for those people on tourist visas.

Couldn't you just say you're going to be taking the ferry to Japan or China later? Or do you need a ticket for that too? What if you're backpacking without a definite schedule? Can't you do that? |

The main reason they want to make sure you have a ticket is to make sure you can afford to leave and don't end up working somewhere to pay for your ticket home.
That is another option, you can order a ferry ticket ahead of time and that would count. Assuming you could get it online, which I'm sure you can. I only took the China ferry, but went and got the ticket there, not online. |
