How do the Koreans discriminate against fat people? I read it a couple of places and was curious how so.
Thanks! |

One form is teasing: 뒈지선생 Pig Teacher from the students.
Another form is optimization: it's un-economical to cater for people of large body-size, so they don't bother.
They are not going to turn you away at restaurants because you might eat too much.
They are not going to forbid you to sit because you might break a chair.
They are not going to put you in a fat-farm.
Koreans do not say the great western putdown: you could lose a few pounds.
Pear shaped person is un-attractive in Korea.
All-in-all, much less than western societies, I'd say. |

I think all Koreans have a M.A. in weight management because they sure like to give opinions and advice so openly. Some of them are about as subtle as 3 rd grade primary students with their comments and this continues well past 3rd grade to infinity. The amount of junk food places they have equals very fat Koreans now and more to come in the future. |

The only real difference is they have no qualms about mentioning your weight problem directly in conversation, whereas Westerners might be more subtle or avoid the topic unless you bring it up first. |

I think Korean brutal honesty is awesome. If you are fat, short, ugly, smelly, skinny, bald, old or anything else, they will just say it up front. I think it's great. What is wrong with it? If you really are any of these things, then you know it anyway.
In Korea people called me skinny, short, handsome, hairy, strong, muscular, stinky, etc. I thought it was so refreshing, I loved it. True honestly with no BS political correctness.
When I left Korea, I had a roomate who probably weighed about 280 pounds in the US. And since it's the US, nobody ever told her to her face that she was fat. And she seemed to be unaware of it, or not care about it.
Every night she was eating pizzas, burgers, fast food, etc. And I think that it was because every day, her weight was never brought up and it was basically a non-issue, so she continued to live a very unhealthy life without really considering whether or night it's the proper way to go.
A few times I tried to talk about health and fitness with her. A couple times I tried to get her to go to the gym or bicycle with me. And she instantly got incredibly offended and indignant each time.
So, is there really anything wrong with calling a person fat if they really are fat? I don't know if it's really wrong. Some people are naturally fat genetically. But really, most people are fat because of their unhealthy lifestyle and diet. If they took propler care of their bodies, they would have more of a strong, chubby build. |
