A man in New Zealand who cooked his pet dog will not be charged as it is legal to do so.
Paea Taufu, a Tongan-born man living in Auckland New Zealand was in the process of roasting his pitbull terrier-cross in a traditional Umu pit-barbecue when animal protection inspectors arrived to investigate.
They were called by a concerned member of the public on Sunday but arrived too late for the animal.
Dog meat is considered an acceptable fare in Tonga. "Dog, horse, we eat it in Tonga. It's good food for us," said Lupi Taufu, Paea's wife.
Under New Zealand's Animal Welfare Act it is legal to kill a dog providing the slaughter is done quickly and painlessly.

Let the man eat whatever he wants other than endangered species or human. |

No meaningful difference between this and eating a cow. |

I could give a crap what he does in the privacy of his back yard. The absurd part of this is that this is a huge story in NZ right now. I'm over there now and the news is about to start, if this story gets top billing I'm never coming back to this back water, hick country. |

In the written article it says:
"......indicated he will not kill another dog to avoid offending anyone in the future."
In the video it says:
"He won't avoid killing dogs in the future just to avoid offending people."
So, which is it? When you are speaking for a third person do not give two opposite stories. One version makes him sound understanding to others, the other makes him sound like he is being a smartass. What bad reporting.
PS: Dog is gooooooooooooooooooooood.

If a person wants to eat dog good on them. Especially, if it is part of their culture and they wish to do so. I don't have a problem with it. Dog meat is quite delicious having eaten it my self on a number of occaisions. However, I would have problems eating my own pet dog if I had one. |

I asked an adult class once if they had any traumatic memories from childhood. A woman told me it was when her drunk uncle came over to the house when she was four. He proceeded to scoop her pet pooch into a sack, beat it to death with a board, then cook it up. That's farked up! People really can be ethically defined by how they treat animals. This dude in NZ fails, sorry. |

This dude stunned the animal then cut its throat. He didn't break any laws and killed the dog in a humane fashion. He didn't treat it any worse than a goat or a sheep. Would we be having this conversation if it were one of those animals? |

Was he really that hungry? I thought pet meant friend. No interest in eating friends. Thus, it sounds wrong to me. |

Wow, are you one of my former students? Were you in my class? The drunk beat the poor animal to death. Many Koreans think it "improves the meat." And yes, I'd be concerned if I saw a drunk put a goat or a sheep into a sack and beat it to death. |

I was talking about the guy in the news article. I'm in New Zealand right now, so have seen the story in various iterations at least 6 times, including an interview with the guy and his family. |

But a goat doesn't curl up next to your feet so cute and cuddly.
LOL, totally agree.
To everyone else.....
If your argument is that you shouldn't eat dogs because they are pets, then logically, a dog that was bred as a food animal and not a pet, you should be fine with eating.
If your argument is that dogs are intelligent, then you must never eat pork because pigs are smarter than dogs.
If your argument is dogs are just so cute and cuddly and you just wanna wuv 'em all up... well, they are~! But so are baby chickens, and I bet you eat eggs~!
LOL, to each their own. I'm not planning on trying dog, but that's because everyone says it's not even that great, guys only eat it for you know what.... |

What do you think a pet dog would do if the owner died and the dog was trapped with the corpse for days without being found? |
