So, my contract ends in early October. I would love to stay in Korea at least another year, preferably at my current school (they are great people and my pay is excellent). However, they are having financial troubles, and since I am the only foreign teacher (and get the highest salary), it's looking like they will not be able to renew my contract. I've been advised by my coteacher to wait until September 1st to ask about the contract (she plans on warning them ahead of time so they will be ready for the conversation- the director doesn't speak much ENglish, so he usually has his daughter there for such conversations).
Anyway, my question is, what should I be doing in the meantime? SHould I start looking for another job now? If my current empolyer resigns me, I suppose I would be willing to forfeit time off to go home, but if I go somewhere else, I would really like to spend a month at home first. SHould I start looking now? Should I wait until after we have the conversation or until I'm in the States? What about renewing the Visa, how much time does it take? SHould I be trying to get paperwork together atm?
Also, if they are having financial troubles, do I need to worry about my job midyear if they do sign me again? |

I would start looking around now just in case you did lose your job. Since your already over there you probably have some connections or a better idea about the jobs that are available to you.
Just do some research and plan ahead. |

I agree, better to assume--and plan for--the worst. |

Me too, the job market is tight right now. |

You can't rely on your K employer to tell you the truth. They could string you along - and then simply ditch you at contract end.
You should gather NEW E2 visa documents NOW!
Then you'll have them ready for:
(a) for a new job (if needed)
(b) if your employer goes broke after you re-sign (docs valid for 6 months).
Good luck. |

It actually makes me sad that everyone has such negative remarks. I actually trust my emplyer alot, he has not failed me yet and has actually treated me almost like family. I just know the situation (even if it isn't spoken aloud).
I will work on getting my stuff together now however. Even if the market is tight here, it's not nearly as bad as if I get stuck back at home. |

I dont think anyone's trying to be negative, but at the end of the day, you have to watch out for yourself because nobody else will. Its just a fact of life, whether you live in Korea, Canada, US, Ausie or anywhere in the world. |

I agree with everybody else on doing the job hunting now.
I'll add a reason: in country, you can scope out the new job offers which you can't do if you wait until you go home for a break |
