Today, one of the parents phoned the school to tell them that her kid was no longer named 'Harry, but instead is now called MIKHAIL GORBACHEV!!! Are you kidding me? I now have to seriously stand in front of a class and say, "Mikhail Gorbachev, could you stop sucking on your fist?" or "Alright, who pooped their pants? I'm looking at you, Mikhail Gorbachev!"

That's the weirdest name I've had to bestow upon a child... But in the past I've had several Harry Potters, David Beckhams, Rooneys, Dragons, Tigers, Rions ('Lion', spelled more Korean), Rucy (Lucy), Don Cass (돈가쓰)... All kinds of stupid names.

Has anyone heard of anything funnier/weirder?

I have 3 Harry's in one class. After awhile they decided they didn't want to be Harry 1, 2 and 3, so they chose:

-O.G. Harry Nuclear (he knew what O.G. meant)
-Harry Donkey
-Harry

It's pretty amusing doing attendance.

I encourage them to be creative with their names, since I suppose it's one of the few creative times they get. Mikhael Gorbachov might be going a bit too far tho'.

Based on obtuse generalizations such as this

Quote:
There is not an English sentence written in Korea that doesnt contain some monumentally dumb mistake.

and your borderline-delusional rants, I'm a little dubious.

I had several Tonys in one class - the Korean teacher gave them various letters as surnames.

Aw, now I'm sad... Skepticism makes me cry. Pah. Tell me you've never heard of an unusually named kid in Korea...

Perhaps they stumbled upon the news that today was the anniversary of Gorbachev's own government ousting him and thought it was a great name.

Perhaps. It's a tremendous display to support to rename one's own child. I never knew Koreans cared so much about Gorbachev.

Also, the quote Tiberious aka Sparkles is referencing is from: http://koreanrumdiary.blogspot.com/2009/08/teaching-mikhail-gorbachev.html

I had a first grader who first introduced himself to me as Captain. I thought that was a great name. A few days later he told me his name was Cabin. I went with that one too. Finally, about a week later his mum came in and insisted that his name is Kevin. He was by far my favourite student here.

A close second was one student who asked me to call him Sudden Attack.

I have two students, brother and sister, who are named Harry Blackmun (US Supreme Court Justice who wrote the majority decision on Roe v. Wade) and Margaret Thatcher, respectively.

I asked the parents how those those names were picked, and in limited English, I came to understand that it was because of a book they read.

Nicely done. That might be funnier than Mikhail Gorbachev.

If I'm ever allowed to speak to the parents again, I'll ask them what the hell inspired their choice.
