I'm in the process of getting my E2, but waiting for the criminal record check is taking very long. . .I'm in the country on a tourist visa. . .had left for a period before after my last contract, and so need to go through the process again.
I'm to get married to a Korean in Ocotber, and we'll do the paperwork sometime this fall. So, my question, do any of you know if, getting the F2 visa, you can bypass the criminal record check?
I worry that the US Gov't will take too terribly long to get my CBC back to me and. . .(They've already rejected my application once, for I had sent them $4 too much. . .god knows what other technicalities are awaiting. . .)
Just wondering. . . |

As I understand it, you don't need the check for immigration to issue you an F2 visa, however, your employer may still require one. But if that's the case you can most likely get a local/state/online check done as I think it's only immigration that insists on all the FBI/apostille rigmarole. |

Thanks. . . My employer has already hired me. I just need to go through governmental steps.
Also, I asume that to get the F2, one must still go to Japan? I tried to phone immigration today, but the line was busy all day. |

Search me, I was in country when I got mine but I was changing visa status, not applying for a new one. Good question. Let us know.
A pointless post. Sorry. |

No one who has talked about getting an F2 has ever mentioned needing to leave the country for it. |

If you work for a hakwon, yes. If you work for a public school, not likely. The CBC is an immigration requirement...but Immigration doesn't overly care about F-2 visa holders. However the MOE which controls public schools also makes that a requirement for all full-time teachers. Even Korean teachers have to submit one.

Well from my experience you don't have to leave the country to get your F-2 visa. It does give you added freedom. No longer can you be held captive by your workplace. Though some places are reluctant to hire you because of the freedom you have. But overall you can do whatever you want and work where you want. So enjoy your quasi-resident status. Cheers |
