|
|
With his recent passing, I thought I would take some time to find tidbits of information about him and his past, from various online sources. This exercise was intended to be educational and to not pass judgment on the man. I was here during the duration of his presidency.
Kim Dae Jung early life
Tidbit information retrieved from three different online sources
- He was the second of seven children of middle-class farmers.[1]
- Kim Dae-jung was born a second son to a farmer living in a
small village on the island of Haui off the South Coast of Korea
on January 6, 1924. [2]
- He spent his early years on a small island called Haui to an unwed
mother who ran a small shop and tavern serving workers who
extracted salt from sea water. [3]
Question: What do we know if anything about his siblings?
Based solely on speculation [on my part] but perhaps his siblings did not survive the Korean War. I'm most interested to know.
* From AOL online ~
Kim is survived by his wife and three sons: Kim Hong-up,
Kim Hong-il and Kim Hong-gul. His first wife, Cha Yong-ae,
died in 1960.
- no mention of any surviving siblings
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kim Dae Jung - The son of a middle-class farmer..
Inquiry~ How does this fit with the previously mentioned online source?
- see [2] above.
and more..
From Chicago Tribune online
Kim Dae Jung was born on tiny Haui island off the southwestern coast of South Korea, in Cholla province, renowned for the anti-authoritarian streak of its people.
Kim Dae Jung was the child of a concubine because his mother was not legally married to his father, who had a first wife. Nonetheless, such arrangements were common at the time and Kim's parents lived as man and wife, raising three sons. He was the oldest.
Inquiry ~ If Kim Dae-jung was born a second son to a farmer, how can
he be the oldest?
Does anyone know if Kim Dae Jung penned a memoir detailing his early
life?
The state funeral for Kim Dae Jung will be on Sunday Aug 23rd. This day
has been declared a national holiday.
No more sorrow, no more pain. May he rest in peace. |

They probably meant the oldest of the sons that Kim's father had with his concubine, not the first wife. |

Birth certificates back in the day, in Korea, aren't too accurate. I've heard of people registering their kid a year after of the birth. And obviously a war can really effect accuracy of records. |
