If you were dropped last minute by SMOE and you have a contract, and a visa, and a lane ticket post here. We may need to get organized in the event there is anything (is there anything... prolly not!) we can do about it. The reality is, they have no job for us, they are backing out of the contract... you are brave if you go with outone but...man, they have no job for us. What is showing up going to do?

If it's not too late, I think you guys should show up anyway. It's doubtful that they'll do a damn thing to help, but they might have facilitators there who will be willing to help you find a new job and transfer your visa.

Can't believe that they've done this to so many people.

but if we show up, and still have no job, whihc we certainly will not- why else tell us so, we then have to bare the expense of getting accomodation, food and travel ourselves. so by being a bit stubborn and flying across the planet to a job we know no longer exists, with a contract that is now invalid, we essentially double our financial losses. SMOE is not concerned with our well being- one need only look at how so many peole who have followed their contracts in good faith have been cast aside with no regard for the detriment this will cause. i mean seriously, you give someone 24 hours notice that a 12 month job is gone- that is the defintion of callous.
as for the -insert racist comment here- that is absolutely needless and silly. race has absolutley 0% to do with this. this is a cut and dry matter where one party has been dishonourable and malicious, where as the second has been duped while acting in good faith. being reckless with another person's livelihood knows no ethnicity.

You have a legal document - the visa - what SMOE would do I imagine is get you a letter of release from their organization and worknplay should get you a job - even if it is a crappy hagwon - I know thats a big 'would' and a big 'should' but how much have you spent on this venture now as it is? 2000 dollars? It will be something around that figure and you are getting none of that back if you don't go now.

You are dealing with a typical Korean mindset though - they are hoping you are just going to go away and not bother them but if you turned up and went to the police - 'I have come here and the people who are responsible for taking me to my new workplace have not turned up' worknplay are not some two bob, mums basement set up. They are massive - make them responsible.

I started a thread at efl law if anyone wants to expand upon it:

If there's anyone on the board that knows a korean lawyer it might be worth checking into.

I gotta say guys, i think you are yanking the proverbial Tiger (no asian pun intended,,, ok maybe a lil bi) by the tail should you show up and cause a huff. Yes we are out money, but , brass tacks, they dont want me, they wont give me a job. Contract or not, showing up and making a fuss will only irritate people who are already screwed. Besides, how can I demand something that just dosoved into thin air? I have acontract for a job that does not exist, I have a visa for a job that is NOT there. A word comes to mind when thinkng of this situation and what it means for me; BUPKIS. ;; NADA. ZILCH. SQUADOOSH. RUBE. MARK. STOOGE. SAP.SUCKER. PUNK. But that's just me. We got conned, plain and simple.

Not paticulary - you either use the legal document in your passport and save something from this or you forget about it and go back to square one with a job in another country. It is up to you really isn't it? The facts are you are legally entitled to work in South Korea at this moment in time so in essence - you do have something, which is an E2 visa - now SMOE are more than likely to give you a letter of release from their organization which leaves you free to find something else.

Some people are comfortable about doing that and some people aren't - at the end of the day - it is a [Mod Edit]- but sir - it is your [Mod Edit].
If you have a decent amount of savings - you could try and find something or cut your losses.

I have to say - In a post on another thread you made - people think a lot of us are bigots when we vent on here - but let me tell you, you have learnt a horrible lesson in Korean ethics that a lot of us go through. I am hoping you pull something out of the bag!

Yes.

You will need a letter of release from SMOE which your recruiter will help you with and you are free to find another job in-country. If you went with a big recruiter like korvia or worknplay then you have jobs galore to choose from even if they are hagwons.

GEPIK might be a good fit also - most schools are an hour away from Seoul.

[quote="Demophobe"]I can't believe that people are telling those who clearly have no job waiting for them to come. Easy to say from our homes here, all safe and secure.

It is easy to say - because I would damn well do it! If I have paid out on airfare, visa costs, getting the CRC and all the other crap which costs money to get hold of - I don't know - maybe some people have a 1000 pounds or near as damn it to throwaway - I know I don't.

Quote:
Look, if you lost your job, expect problems at Incheon. The guys there will lookup your visa on the computer and there will be a problem.

Where has anyone said that visas have been cancelled?

Quote:
You were notified that you have no job, so you have no job, no E2, or it is being canceled as we write. Your E2 is dead.

What crap are you talking about? The E2 visa is dead? Are you on drugs?
So SMOE or worknplay have gone all Jesus Christ like and have contacted the South Korean embassies of the seven countries and stated 'right cancel xxx visas on 24 hours notice if you please' Thats not how it works.

Quote:
Contact the Korean embassy for an explanation or call a lawyer. Come here on a tourist visa and try to find work. Contact another recruiter from home and try for another position. These are your options.

Thats good advice. But if you are on the way or you are going tomorrow or in a couple of days with everything squared away - what have you got to lose.

So how does it work then? And what's the difference regarding procedure? They have no job. Any E2 that lingers is a phantom that will disappear soon.

What have they got to lose? Well, a partial refund on their plane ticket, money for transportation/food/housing after they arrive, not knowing a lick of Korean, having no friends to count on, trying to fight SMOE....I would say they had a lot to lose. More than if they just stayed home and try again from there.
