Apparently immigration is now requiring that we get a STATE criminal background check, and the local one is no good anymore?

Just F'in great..... I spent almost a hundred dollars getting that local background check for no reason. And now I have to sit around and wait some more.

It's too bad they have a swear filter on this site.....

So I guess i'm the only one who was inconvienenced by this? I guess I should have just got the state check in the first place.

Local criminal background checks are no longer accepted. Be advised.

I was under the impression that it has always been a state background check. Anyway, if you have to get one, count on two months from the time you send it. You'll need to get a fingerprint card from your local police station and a money order/check from KEB.

Not just you, I'm in the same boat. So I'm assuming you actually tried and got rejected by Immigration? I haven't submitted anything yet but all the recruiters and people on the boards seem to imply there's no chance of them accepting local anymore. And the immigration website no longer says local is one of the acceptable options :-/

Yep, it sucks. They changed this back in June but failed to make any formal announcement. I was able to get into SMOE with my local check in June, but all of the hagwons I was looking at were already requesting the state checks. Guess Korean immi is wisening up, lol.

Sorry you got stuck in a bad spot. I wish the Korean govt would at least give a 30-day notice of the day they plan to implement changes like this, so you would have known to get your things in early or just go for the state check to begin with. Korea Sparkling.

So I guess that I got lucky. My papers were turned in on the24th of July and I must have had a lazy Immi. inspector, because he accepted my local from AZ., I also gave a copy of my fingerprint card as well. I have been a substitute teacher in AZ for 7 years. AZ doesn't do a State Check, only an FBI check which takes 2 or 3 months. They didn't finish processing my paper work until the 3rd of Aug. They could have changed their minds mid-stream.

If you are already in Korea, you shouldn't need another one. Get your current school to fill out a transfer form.

Some states are a real hassle, and apparently some don't even have "state" checks, you have to get your FBI one done.

Luckily, some states are so bad. Try calling before you send your paperwork. Some will let you come in and get it yourself. The website basically only had directions for getting checks by mail. I called anyway....

Me: How long to get a background check from the time I mail it in?
Them: About 3 or 4 weeks.
Me: There's no way to speed it up?
Them: If you can come in person, it will only take about 15 minutes.
Me: See you tomorrow.

Now, there are options sometimes. Fingerprints, no fingerprints. You don't need fingerprints, and they take longer anyway.

Anyway, try calling, the worst that can happen is you have to do exactly what you were going to do anyway.

It's easy. Just mail a request in to your's or another state's government and then mail it again for the apostle. Cheap and not too time consuming.

Thanks for the responses.

It's a stupid rule anyway. If a person has a criminal record in a certain state, they can just order the check from another state anyway. So it's pretty pointless for keeping criminals away.

The only people it will really keep away are those who have committed crimes in all 50 states. You would have to be pretty ballsy to do that.

You get the check in whatever state your a resident in. You can't exactly hand in a check for texas if you live in Hawaii.

I hope that this is true. I am already in town, just having left one job with letter of release. My new boss is going to immi on Wednesday to transfer my visa. The apostilled background check I submitted is a local one.

By the way, I thought that was the whole purpose of the state apostille - to legitimize the local CBC's.

Ya, life is right, you're good to go. And you're right, the purpose of the apostille is to legitimize the local ones, but it's not the legitimacy that is the problem. The problem is people can have records in one town, and go fifteen minutes to the next town and get a clean record. That's why they want at least state ones, for the coverage area.
