I stayed in a hostel in Taipei called Taipei House. It was fairly cheap and pretty nice. Of course you have to check out Taipei 101 and all the shopping around that area. I was only there for a day, but there's plenty to do around 101 to fill a day. |

Hire a scooter from Jeremy at http://www.bikefarm.net/ and head out of Taipei up to the North Coast. Some nice beaches and other things to see. Traffic in Taipei takes some getting used to but it's great fun |

Taipei 101
Chang Kai Shek Memorial Hall
National Palace Museum
Topeka Gorge (national park about 2 hours train East of Taipei, you can buy a ticket from the central train station on arrival). I don't usually visit natural areas when traveling, but I really liked a day trip through the gorge/caves. Especially the water sheet cave at the end of the trail we took (from Lonely Planet). The cave has a stream on the bottom and very solid sheets of water coming down on you.
Subway is very convenient. It seemed like 2 days would be enough for Taipei itself, maybe even only 1 if you hurried. Add an additional day for the gorge.
We stayed at the Yomi Hotel which a very nice hotel I believe aimed at Japanese tourists, but around 85,000 KRW/night. |

In the mall under Taipei 101 is a mall with a Flavorfield's bakery.
They have various meat and cheese filled rolls for lunch. I bought a
whole bunch of things and ate them for dinner also.
There is a free shuttle from the subway stop.
Get the regular card that works like T-money. Take the ropeway to the
top and hike the trails and visit the zoo.
There are some cheap hotels north of the bus station. |

Hualien is a nice place about 3 hours from Taipei.
You can rent a scooter (with just a passport) for quite cheap right across from the train station. Fill it up for about 4k won. and take off. Taroko Gorge is about 45 minutes away.
There's also Jici Beach which is 45 minutes away along a very scenic road that runs along the coast. The beach is quite small but in a really beautiful location. |

Just a note. I just got back from Taiwan last week after visiting family. They said it's pratically impossible to get to the southern part of the island right now because of all the damage the typhoon caused a few weeks ago.
So if you're planning to go to Taiwan soon, don't count on getting to the southern part of the island. |

In Taipai I'd recommend Chocolate Backpackers Inn. It's close to a lot of things, cheap and clean! |
