While I'm hopelessly biased regarding this subject, I am at least aware that my bias is the result of cultural conditioning. It is because of this cultural relativity (not despite) that I have the right to ridicule Korea's "custom" of dog eating just as a Korean has the right to stare and giggle at me. The door swings both ways. |

I agree. That's the aspect that makes it so much more difficult to accept.
The cultural relativists here have half of the right idea when they point out superficial similarities between animal treatment in Korea and the West. I fully understand and appreciate that part of the argument. They lose me, however, when many of them fail to measure the cruelty involved. Instead of saying "some things are similar, and can be compared and contrasted", they say "all things are exactly the same, and there is no point in measuring anything". It makes about as much sense as saying "all airlines are equally safe". They've glued themselves to this pseudo-Confucian doctrine of stubborn vagueness where all space and time is indivisible and indistinguishable from any other part of itself. It is a way of thinking where progress and classification are impossible. Even Koreans themselves are growing out of this. |

I'm not against anyone eating dogs- I have- so long as they are kept and treated humanely- which they obviously aren't here.
Overall, i'm far more concerned about the cruelty being inflicted on wild animals and birds worldwide through loss of habitat, hunting, pollution, and illegal trade in animal products...its of much greater significance to our planet than the plight of a lot of domestic animals. In my opinion, all the money used to provide homes for old horses, stray cats etc would much better be used to help the cause of conserving threatened species.
we are destroying the world's biodiversity, breaking the essential chain of life, link by link.
Domesticated cats and dogs run wild, are a big threat to the worlds ecosystems. I'd have no problem with a massive and comprehensive cull of domesstic/feral cats in australia, for example. They've virtually wiped out a big variety of native birds and mammals. |

Very well said Rapier!
The worst Ive seen was two years ago at the beach in Busan...An ajossi and his girlfriend got into an arguement in a carpark and i stopped to watch what he was shouting about...suddenly he snatched a little Yorkshire terrier out his 'girlfriends' hands showed it to her one last time before kicking the dog about fifteen foot in the air ...after it landed he stamped on it and kicked it across the car park in my direction...at first I thought it was a cuddly toy but it moved slightly...My blood boiled up in a second but I went to the dog instead of the guy ,who was making a hasty exit in his car....the little thing was a smashed up ball of fur I tried to move him but he scream in a pain from the internal injuried it must have had ...finally the police came and "took" it away... |

I see that no one has objected to how they treat hens in egg farms. That post is in "Who is sick therad". Too much to retype here, I will bump it up (looks like down to me) so it will be last. Please read it.
