| I showed up for work this Wednesday and was told to go home but I was also told I need to get tested for swine flu before coming back to work this Monday. When I asked my cooridnator where, she said any hospital. Admittedly, I was annoyed but hey, I had the next 3 days off so I didn't say anything. I saw nothing about this on the SMOE website and it seems pretty ridiculous to me since I'm not sick in the least and I don't think I should pay one Won because of the insane paranoia that is running through this country. Has anybody else been asked to do the same thing? |

I returned from vacation with flu symptoms and was told to stay home. As I had a fever I chose to take the test, there are very few places in my area where this is available so I had to trek to one. Basically the test = a nasal swab (yuk), cost me 20.000 won and took 90 mins to produce a result. (Neg)
Then when I got home and Googled this test I realised it was pretty useless.
So I would say stay home and ask them to pay the 200.000 needed for an accurate test 
P.S. There is not worthy treatment unless u r caught in the first 2 days of being symptomatic. |

there is no difference between a normal flu and swine flu. swine flu just happens to be a recognizeable strain that can actually be confirmed with accurate testing.
symptoms and treatment are exactly the same. if they give you a couple free days off, excellent.
if they told me to go get tested. i would leave not get tested and go back to bed.
"where are the results?" "oh i didnt bring them. they were negative" |

Well now I'm kinda glad I didn't get tested because my coordinator seemed to have forgotten that she told me to. I would have spent the money and time getting tested for nothing. Maybe she was misinformed at the time.
Though now their taking the temperatures of every student who enters the school premises and sending them home for a week if they have a fever. Well, at least that'll give them the chance to actually stay home when they're sick. These kids never get off.
As for the SMOE comment, my job is many times better than my friends' teaching jobs here in Korea. Never had a problem with basic respect and following of the contract rules. In fact, they've bended the rules in my favor. |

Yup, this coordinator is a nice person but she is so disorganized and doesn't know what's going on, sometimes I have to shake my head in disbelief. I'm guessing it's the whole system that's at fault. |

Try the whole country is at fault. Everything seems to be pretty much disorganised in Korea, everything except the public transportation, that is. Go figure. |

I'm sure there are very good schools within SMOE.
but I'm not interested in being assigned by SMOE and being told what to do by SMOE. I'm also not interested in their 3 week mandatory camps when schools are closed for vacations and their other myriad assinine rules.
SMOE gets to treat their FT's like crap because that's where everyone wants to work. I won't be making that mistake.
Didn't a SMOE teacher post a while back that they needed their principal's permission to leave Seoul on a weekend?? 
bwahhahahaha
(granted that's a reversed case, a ridiculous school other than SMOE, but given what I've read here about them in the last 6 months whatever interest I may have ever had to work for them has basically waned) |
