What a difference!
My Compaq notebook vs. my new Jooyontech desktop with Samsung LCD
wowowowow. Same price for 2-3xs better specs
Check my website to see my new setup.
I'd rather leave my desktop at home than have a crappy notebook, or having a really expensive notebook and worrying about it.

A notebook is more about convenience and looking cool, is it not? I thought that we all knew that. |

Right. I bought my notebook thinking I'm such a traveller and it would be great for me, but I found myself leaving it at home anytime I travelled, so what was the point? It's amazing how much more you get in a desktop for the same price. Games look 50x better. |

I bought a notebook because, as an expat, I need my computer to be mobile. That's not to say that I take it with me when I travel, because I don't, but it's easier to take with me when I move, especially when I decide to leave Korea. I'll be able to take my notebook with me, but if I had a desktop, I'd have to try to sell it. I bought my notebook in the US (they're much cheaper there), and I wouldn't have been able to bring it if it were a desktop. Also, I take it with me to school now and then if I have a lot of time to kill between classes, I can get some things done or play games. In short, I'm glad I have a notebook, because if I had a desktop, I'd always be wondering what would become of it when the time came to move (as it is my single most expensive possession). |

shawner88 now that you've gotten a new desktop any chance you'd get off your behind and finish the story of your first year in korea from your blog. Myself and the other teachers at my school were addicted to it. Believe me we need all the laughs we can get. |

I was in the same dilemma as you until I went into a one of those computer megastores (Future Shop, in my case) and asked every question in the book related to buying a desktop vs. buying a laptop. Originally I was going to buy the laptop but now I'm leaning towards the desktop (still haven't bought it yet). The only thing I really liked about the laptop was using its wireless rounter to use it anywhere in the house--possibly of limited importance in Korea, I'm not sure. Saving space was nice too. But I also didn't like the limited video specs for gaming, as well as smaller monitor and possible ghosting.
I am planning to buy one of the LCD monitors (a good one--specs are important here), which will limit one of the most bothersome things about desktops--the space they take up--and still give me a great system. |

Yeah, this Samsung LCD is amazing. It's the clearest screen I've ever seen. That's why they are #1 in the market.
As far as moving. That's another reason I chose a laptop before. But then I realized, the only place I'll be moving is in Korea. I have no plan to go home or teach in another country anytime soon. By the time I leave (if ever), the notebook would be outdated anyway and I'd want to sell it, same with this desktop.
Ghost - thanks for the kick in the butt about the story. I'll try, I promise. |
