there is controversy whether dairy is healthy or not. naturally, the dairy industry spends tons of money trying to convince the western population that it's healthy.
contrary to popular belief, dairy isn't actually an excellent source of calcium. although one cup of milk provides about 30% of the recommended daily intake of calcium, many dont know that the calcium in dairy is actually poorly absorbed, roughly only 30%. and if dairy was such a super source of a calcium, the prevalence of osteoporosis shouldnt be so high in north america. additionally, i believe the rate of osteoporsis is a lower in asia, despite the fact they are not big consumers of dairy.
i remember reading stuff by john berardi, ph.d, and he said the strongest correlates of bone health are 1) resistance bearing exercises; and 2) fruit and vegetable intake. dark green veggies are generally a decent source of calcium, and are actually absorbed by the body better than the calcium found in dairy. i believe the absorption % is about 50+ for certain veggies, much higher than milk's 30.
i dont drink too much milk; i have a cup a day for my cereal. i'd rather drink goat's, but i dunno if it's readily available in korea. i stay away from soy; the soy industry has also spent tons of money on marketing to make people think it's some sort of super food.
i guess the key is moderation. |
