I've been told that the Easy Korean series is pretty useful. I have a friend using it right now. I also have Lonely Planet's Korean Phrasebook which is nice for just quick stuff on the fly.

I have a Basic Korean class tomorrow. We're supposed to get our books then. I'll let you know the name of it and if it's any good.

Richard Harris' Roadmap to Korean. Very detailed book with lots of grammatical explanations without beginning at too high a level.

That book won't teach you anything at all... It's not even meant as a study book but rather an overview of the language, and it does a poor job at that.

I recommend "Survival Korean" by Stephen Revere, Integrated Korean series from University of Hawaii also I heard good stuff about GANADA books, but haven't gotten a chance to look trough them.

This one is pretty good.. simple and explains grammar rules pretty well. They have Beginners korean 1 and 2. Its probably a good idea to have a bunch of different material to learn from. I wouldnt rely too much on grammar books though Its hard to self study and stay interested in language grammar and actually memorize everything. That kind of studying doesnt work, look at koreans and learning english. They just learn to memorize a bunch of words and grammar patterns that dont really help them. Or look at how most people learn spanish or french in highschool. These methods of teaching generally dont work and if it does work on the few that study extra hard its a really slow way of learning. Anyways Once you learn the korean writing system and the basics , its probably best to just immerse yourself in everything korean ie: watching korean tv , korean dramas , korean movies, find korean radio/news wheres you can read the korean script on the side in korean and with an english translation. Its more important for you to just get your brain used to listening to the language than it is to learn grammar rules. After a while you kinda just pick up vocabulary and grammar natually ( Its good to dive back into grammar books every now and then to strengthen your korean grammar knowledge. Just bad idea to try to memorize everything from the get go)

No crap, I used Survival Korean just last night and loved it! I learned to read hanguel in 2 1/2 hours. The book says it takes four, but you can learn it quicker than that! good luck. The first one is 'Survival korean' its a GREEN book... there are also ones about grammar and vocab they are red and brown Smile it cost me... 22,000w

This is probably the best beginner book I've seen:

There is also a green colored one which I think is more advanced, but I haven't looked inside it yet.
