Our school just bought several new Quad-core computers... and they put XP on all of them.
That's why I hate Vista. Koreans are so afraid of it, so disgusted with rumors/problems/past bad press about it, they'll go back to XP.
So here we sit with these blazing new computers and a freakin' creeky old operating system on them.
Maybe they'll upgrade to Windows 7 later? I highly doubt it. That would mean having to upgrade the schools crappy/antiquated login program that won't even work with Vista. So we'll stick with the same POS old XP operating system -- probably for the life of these computers.
That's why I hate Vista (and now Windows 7). Microsuck wants you to pay a pretty penny for the ability to use legacy software. |

Perhaps ..

Ah! This is probably the real cause of your school sticking with XP, no?

Wow! Microsuck! That's almost as good as Micro$oft!
...
While there are some options (XP VMs, for one) - if the school (board) hasn't updated their software, and XP meets all of the requirements, why shouldn't they load XP on their new computers?
There's more to IT planning than geek angst... |

The reason they don't want to get rid of their antiquated system is because the software you must install to use wifi here gives them TOTAL control of your computer... they can even force-install Ahn Labs anti-virus software on your computer, if they want! I hate it.
Vista won't allow for them to get away with this.
My home used to be next to the school, and hooked into the system. I used to be able to block them with a firewall, but now they've programmed it so that the internet will not work unless they have full permission with no blocks.
I hate the obsessive control issues that the Korean IT people at our university have.... wanting total power over EVERYONE's machine that hooks into their system. |

So, this is the crux of your anger. Well, I can tell you that the ultimate goal of any IT manager is, in fact, the ultimate control of your PC. It just makes sense from a management point of view (legal liability, resource allocation and management, etc). The end-user experience doesn't really count for much unless it affects job performance.
Vista, if deployed in a corporate environment can also have software installs pushed to clients, I can assure you. The fact that your school hasn't gone vista has basically only to do with one thing: money.
Still, it's hardly Microsoft's fault -- they are catering to their customer's demands. |

[start rant]
I for one also hate the way they (Korean IT people) usually setup networks. One of the main issues I have seen time and time again is the way they usually setup static IP's when DHCP is the way to go... Drives me nuts...

Ah, well .. it may just depend where. At the company I work at, it's all dynamic.
But yeah, it's really annoying getting that message that someone is using your IP (after you've been using it for a while) -- then what do you do? Guess a few numbers and see what works (kicking others off in the process). Good times. |

Static IP's are also an issue here.
They also force install a program called Softrun that makes all of my antivirus programs go nuts. |

Speaking of Vista and networks, how well does explorer work when you're browsing around the network? XP is pretty stable, but every computer I've ever used always had an issue with viewing workgroup computers. If you're not hooked up to the network, explorer freezes. Has this problem been fixed yet in vista/windows 7? |
