http://www.hani.co.kr/arti/society/society_general/374781.html (in Korean)

Here's an article predicting what Korea would be like in 2050.

Some of the predictions mentioned in the article:

1) Foreigners will make up 10% of the Korean population.
2) The population, overall, will actually decrease due to low birth rates.
3) The GNP will be around $80,000 USD.
4) The average temperature will increase by four, celsius. More rain too.

1) Right now, I think that foreigners make up about 2% of Korea's population. I don't know enough about the population statistics with regards to foreigners in Korea to say whether or not 10% is a realistic percentage or not. However, it does sound somewhat believable given that the population is predicted to decline. If that will be the case, I imagine that some companies will be hiring more foreigners given the smaller domestic pool of job seekers.

2) Again, I have heard that population is projected to decline in the future. So, there certainly is no argument from me on this point.

3) If the GNP does indeed reach $80,000 USD, then that assumes an income growth of about 3.5% per year. That sounds believable. On the other hand, its entirely possible that Korea could experience a lost decade like what happened to Japan. At any rate, by then, I would expect the GNP of Korea to at least be on par with Japan's GNP.

4) If the world experiences a lot of global warming, then I guess that would be the expected result for Korea. However, I sincerely hope that global warming can be mostly mitigated, but if that is going to happen, then China and the USA along with other major carbon dioxide polluters will have to start taking serious action within the next year.

1. That is an interesting statistic, but I think the even MORE interesting one would be what percentage of Korean population is made up of multiracial families.

2. Every single Korean child born in Korea, is most likely another house you have to buy when they get married. No wonder birth rates are low.

3. If you count growth + inflation then $80,000 a year is easy.

4. 4 degrees Celsius? I could've sworn I saw something on TV about Global Warming and how even a 5 degree increase in temperature would cause the sea level to rise so much that most coastal cities would be underwater.

I can't say I know much about the foreigner rate, but because of low birth rates it will be very necessary to bring in more immigrants to maintain low-wage jobs. The US has a similar problem with a declining population, mostly because of the high price of educating children and the fact they don't start making money until their mid-20s.

The variable in the population rate though is the fact that the North and South will likely be reunited by then. Unsure what impact that will have on the economy since most North Korean workers will be unskilled.

It will be interesting (and likely frightening) to see the impact of global warming.

That's actually kind of a coincidence, because I have some predictions of my own.

1. All Korean men will become sex symbols to all women everywhere in the world after a mind-altering parasite renders most of the female population borderline homosexual.

2. Korea will not only become the center of the world, but also the center of the galaxy after they manage to prove once and for all that kimchi makes it possible to breathe in space.

3. Korea will officially become the world's biggest country, just ahead of Russia, after a single ESL instructor says 'well, it's stupid, but okay... '.

4. Korea becomes the world's only AIDS-free zone after the epidemic skyrockets in the west due to excessive use of condoms, fewer prostitutes, and frequent STD tests.

5. Male ESL teachers will recoil in horror as they arrive home and realize just how unkind the years have been to their once-beautiful Korean brides.

6. They'll have to erect barbed wire fences and station armed guards around the borders to keep out all the handsome and beautiful professional teachers that are so desperate to work here that they can't wait to go through all the AIDS tests, blood samples, urine samples, fingerprinting, brain scans, chest x-rays, plastic surgery, vaccinations, military training, police background checks, assassinations, brainwashing, volunteer work, cybernetic implants, genetic engineering, animal sacrifices and sterilization procedures that it takes to qualify for an E-2.

7. Toxic chemicals blown over from China render the East Sea so disgusting and polluted that Koreans begin taking out full page ads in the New York Times telling people that this nasty filth-ridden bog has always been the Sea of Japan and therefore the Japanese are responsible for cleaning it up.

8. Koreans threaten Japan with nuclear war if they don't concede that the Dokdo islets belong to them, and nobody in Japan has any idea what they're even talking about.

The population has gotta grow, we can't become another Japan where 25% of the population is over 65.

I lived in Japan and I never noticed that. I noticed a lot more ajummas out here, but maybe it's because they have the same haircut? lol

I miss Japan

Dumb. Can't believe you spent all that time writing that drivel.

50 years is a long time though, hard to say really as by that stage, if still alive, I doubt any of us would seriously care - we'd be more concerned about our arthritis and what-not.

Aside from the birth rate, global warming and monetary forecasts, lets consider what the society might look like at that time. COMPLETELY WESTERN in thinking and living. The Confucian ideology will be buried. Guys will be flagarantly staring at the chickidees, the chicks will be hitting on the manitas. Chaos in the streets (could it possible get any worse?)!!!!!
Yes, a much greater multicultural make up. Should be intersting!!

ESL Milk "Everyday... you forgot #9 and #10

9. After 28 years of protests by E-2 visa holders all over Korea, the "mandatory Free English lessons on the subway for Korean men who ordinarily will try to fight you because you are talking 'too loud' in a language other than Korean" clause was eliminated from all native speaker contracts. It was replaced by a clause that requires all foreigners to sign a release stating that they will not take pictures of drunken ajushis who are passed out drunk on park benches, subway platforms, stairwells, or sidewalks.

10. Korean female employees are no longer required to sleep with their male superiors. However, it is still highly recommended by the Korean government as a means of gaining favor amongst the bosses and also promoting womens equality.

forever and ever?

Will someone say "stop" when you have to crowd-surf every day to get to work and everyone lives in cubicles on top of eachother?

If the earth is to continue in any sustainable way at all, populations have to start reducing.. not growing.

either it will be recovering from ashes

or a reunified country dealing with the high tax burden for controling the new land..

or...

US military will be gone... and ESL teachers would have moved to Vietnam or cambodia...
becuase Korean schools will be taught in English... and Korean students will go to Hakwons to learn Korean...

foreigners will still be here, but much less 20 or 30 year old hakwon muppets!
