The link causes my computer to crash. Strike One.
Surely the OP is joking. That school is ranked 31st, OF SCHOOLS IN THE SOUTH (USofA). Is that really a stat to be announcing in a thread? Maybe the exclamation marks means he's being sarcastic. While I have no doubt it's a decent program, still ...
Might I suggest The University of Birmingham (UK), for a school of a more world-class nature, ranked 75th IN THE WORLD, using the same US News and World Report ranking. Their TESL/TEFL and Applied Linguistics distance programs are arguably the best.

I don't think you are comparing apples to apples here. We are talking about graduate schools and not the overall school. I can understand why you'd want to mention it. But, we all know that colleges within universities perform differently than universities as a whole. An excellent example would be the MBA schools in Florida. The FSU school of business is always at rivals with UF's MBA; they are the best business schools in Florida. Just because UM is ranked as one of the best schools, period, doesn't mean I'd want to get my MBA from them. Anyways, that's cool. UB as a whole must be doing something right!!!!
PS - How much does it cost anyways? The full program plus books? |

Keep in mind there are probably more universities in the SE region of the United States than in the entire UK.
I graduated from SU's MSEd TESOL way back in 2000. I did not do the program online but on campus and found it to be quite excellent although a tad Krashen focused... |

Agreed, they are all up on Krashen. Lord forbid that you argue against it!

That may be true but that doesn't mean that these universities are any better. I would argue that our top and good universities probably outrank the top and good universities in the south-east (from what I understand, most of the top universities in the U.S. are right in the top north-east corner (Harvard, Yale, etc.)). After all, the Times ranks Birmingham at 22nd place in UK universities and the Guardian ranks it at 24th and it, as someone above posted, is ranked 75th in the world. |

Let's all keep our pants on! No way this should ever become a pissing contest. IMHO.
Let's remember, Bush Jr. graduated from Yale - and in "one of the top" MBA programs in the world....... ugh....
Let's rank the person, not the institution - that's what Voltaire would scream if he were around. L'ecrasez l'infame. Let's get back to the original values of the "enlightenment".

by the way - I've put up a nice list of TESOL and MA online courses on EFL Classroom. I'll make a public version today and post back here... just a handy place to get a list of the most reputable. |

My apologizes to any Republicans for dragging Bush Jr. into this -- he did have his strong points but academics and classwork were not among them, I'm 200% certain.
I really think there is some merit in judging programs. But the proof is always in the pudding, not the cooking. Meaning, good programs are made by good students. This is where the force and flavor resides and NOT with the professors or organization/resources of the program. This goes for all of education. I"m really one with Higgins (thus Shaw) ... Eliza's have the potential within themselves and it is only the environments which mask this. However, for some reason, it seems institutions/environments get the credit when we should applaud the person....
But the flip side holds true also...
I believe - compare programs but always note that a Chomsky could have gone to Iowa State College and still been Chomsky, with the caveat that he might not have gotten anyone to look at what he was doing... Just as an aside, others might find some thoughts about education revealing in this interview of Chomsky's that I just thought of .... especially his saying...

There are huge efforts that do go into making people, to borrow Adam Smith's phrase, "as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human being to be." A lot of the educational system is designed for that, if you think about it, it's designed for obedience and passivity. From childhood, a lot of it is designed to prevent people from being independent and creative. If you're independent-minded in school, you're probably going to get into trouble very early on. |

Chomsky is saying in essence - don't buy into the elitist, class notion of education. You can get just as good an education at home. However, you might not get the money and opportunities (as did Georgie Jr. ).
Sorry for the rambling thoughts but I'd appreciate anyone looking over
my list of MA online courses. Add your comments on EFL Classroom or here if you feel I left some program off the list unwarranted but I tried to stick to those which have had some kind of positive reviews. One of them I was really on the fence about but left it on. Those up on this stuff probably know which one.
Cheers,
DD

Hey D,
You forgot the "T" in TESOL. It isn't ESOL, under Shenandoah. |
