There have been a number of times I've written up a response, or started a new post and then simply throw it away. The biggest reason is that this board is public. If you post on here long enough, it is not hard to find out someone's identity. Remember CPN? It didn't take long for his identity on the board to come out.
Anything you write is there for the world to see, and you can not delete it once its been posted. sure, you can spend the time to go back and edit all the posts you ever made to show nothing, but that does nothing to the text that was "quoted" by other users.
Some of the discussions on here are very heated and a lot of personal opinions come out. What if you were to apply for a job, or run for some kind of public office? Something you say, or a position you took on an argument could come around and bite you on the butt.
My question is, does anyone ever think about that when they post on here? |

I try not to post anything that can be used against me and just talk like I would if I were meeting people face to face; it annoys me when people talk tough on the Internet or otherwise act like jackasses when they wouldn't in real life.
Besides that the only self-censorship I do is not swearing. |

No, most of the time jackasses are the same both on and offline. |

There've been times when I've started to post something and then changed my mind because it's too personal, and I don't want to be identified ...
As for my opinions though, I don't have any that I would be trying to hide. |

Occasionally, I write a post that could be considered offensive, and I delete it. |

A few years ago- nah. Today-absolutely. The tone of the board is far nastier today than it was a few years ago, and the mods are much more sensitive More often than not, posting here doesn't seem worth the hassle |

I'm pretty much the same. It's funny when people kill their credibility on a forum, then complain when people don't pay attention to them when they try to be serious. |

More than you'll ever know. I consider it an exercise in self-discipline. |

That's why some of us use real names. PeteJB and cdninkorea hit it right on the head. |

It's not how long you post...it's WHAT you post. Simply leave out enough personal details, be rather vague about the rest...and there's no reason that anyone should find out who you are. |

I think it's pretty sad that we as posters on Dave's have to watch what we say/type for fear of our actual identities being discovered. Most, if not all of us are citizens of "free countries" (whatever that truly means) and to hold back what one feels or would like to say because we might lose a job oppertunity in the future, Zuckzs!!
I guess we aren't as free as westerners once were!! So much for freedom of speech!! |

I don't edit myself since I don't really care what people think of me. As for my identity I care less who knows about that too. If they are smart enough to put various clues together good for them, grats. If I run for office I'll do it under the context of who I am.
My Id, Ego, and Super Ego don't argue as much as they should. |

Thats the way it should be!! There called opinions, views, beliefs etc. We all have them, should be able to voice them without the fear of some donkey using them against us in the future!! |

Its too bad that things you say/do when you are young can come around and haunt you in the future. Politicians are perfect examples. Look at Jaebom of 2pm. He says what he did when he's 18, and now its going to ruin his career.
One thing that bothers me about Dave's is that its threads show up in google searches. |
