Let's all pretend that we are a bunch of K-teachers.
"The baseball man hit a poul ball"
Always be sure to pronounce your E's after every H.
"Oh my gosh-ee!"
"Look at the fish-ee"
Sorry but......I'm getting tired of trying to reprogram all of my students. |

What you do when they start that crazy P for F jive, you grab their upper lip and hold it up near their nose so they can't possibly make a P. Eventually they make the F sound. But your fingers get slobbered on. |

I'm used to all the pronunciation problems but it honestly bugs the crap out of me every time I hear "buhhhhuuuffweee" instead of "v". Any linguists out there who can enlighten me as to why this is so damn difficult for them to say? |

I can't tell you why, but I can tell you the solution I use: I put my hand around their neck (lightly, of course...no violence......yet) and make them say V. I try to explain to them that they need to use their voice, which usually entails making them grab me around my neck so they can feel the difference between a P and a B. If they are vocalizing it correctly I let go and then make them look at me. I stick my upper teeth way down into stubble territory below my lower lip and make them all look like buck-toothed idiots. Then I make them start saying it. If that doesn't work, I do the same thing as I do with F, pulling their upper lip up until they can pronounce it fairly accurately. Most of my younger students (9 and younger) can pronounce things pretty well. The only problem I have is with letters where I'd actually have to stick my fingers in their mouths to get their tongue in the right position.
Of course, you might already know all this and were asking for a linguist's scientific analysis of the situation. If my post was irrelevant, forgive me. |

You do wash your hands before and after class right?????
I'm surprised that they don't call you "dirty" |

Yeah, they call me 'dirty' all the time. I do it for the love, not the accolades. Anything but the accolades. Lord, I need some accolades.
Edit: And I don't actually stick my fingers in their mouths. I said that's where I have problems, since I couldn't in good conscience do that. Although I've had them stick them in their own mouths so they keep their tongue down when pronouncing R so it doesn't sound like LAAAARL. |

My less violent way is to take my finger and use it to push my upper lip up, and get them to imitate me, telling them that v is impossible if you close your mouth.
If that doesn't work I write:
"Close mouth = No V!"
*^^*
I just had a funny thought. |

The one that drives me crazy, is the people who can make "f" sounds, and proceed to use it instead of "p" every single time.
ex. Flease fay for the fitcher uf front.
There is no solution for this except for electric shocks.
Perhaps putting my hand around their necks in a threatening way would also help here. |

Wow, I must be one bad mo fo.
Seriously, I'm not violent with the kids. Well, maybe some of the kids, but it's all in fun. I can't even tell you how many times I've let them punch me without knocking them unconscious afterwards. Of course, I'm unable to tell you because I'm wearing socks right now and my caveman brain can't count that high. |

My best Korean buddy, who otherwise speaks english very well, suffers from this ailment. I laugh my ass off everytime he tells me to wait while he f**ks the car. lol. |
