What is the deal with Apple milking money from their customers?
Snow Leopard is a service pack. It should be free. |
This is taken for the ars article posted:

One possibility was that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade DVD would only install on top of an existing installation of Leopard. Apple has done this type of thing before, and it bypasses any proof-of-purchase annoyances. It would, however, introduce a new problem. In the event of a hard drive failure or simple decision to reinstall from scratch, owners of the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade would be forced to first install Leopard and then install Snow Leopard on top of it, perhaps more than doubling the installation timeand quintupling the annoyance.
Given Apple's history in this area, no one should have been surprised to find out that Apple chose the much simpler option: the $29 "upgrade" DVD of Snow Leopard will, in fact, install on any supported Mac, whether or not it has Leopard installed. It will even install onto an entirely empty hard drive.
To be clear, installing the $29 upgrade to Snow Leopard on a system not already running a properly licensed copy of Leopard is a violation of the end-user license agreement that comes with the product. But Apple's decision is a refreshing change: rewarding honest people with a hassle-free product rather than trying to punish dishonest people by treating everyone like a criminal. This "honor system" upgrade enforcement policy partially explains the big jump to $169 for the Mac Box Set, which ends up re-framed as an honest person's way to get iLife and iWork at their usual prices, plus Snow Leopard for $11 more. |
It is well worth the 29 dollars. And pirates beware, there are trojans in pirated copies of snow leopard.
But it's an OS that is worth the 30 bucks easy. |

There could be trojans in any particular pirated software if the pirate happened to put one in.
But there usually isn't.
I haven't paid for software in 10 years of owning PC's and I've never had a problem. |

I think the main components are under the hood, so to speak.
Performance wise I've noticed some slight improvements, but nothing to fancy. I like expose more in SL. A few other things are ok.
If you're looking for some big, shinny new toy, then snow leopard isn't it. But running well, etc. Snow Leopard is fine. |

For every person/website that defends Snow Leopard as being a legitimate OS, there seems to be an equally number of websites that says its a Service Pack.
http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/apple/snow-leopard-is-little-more-than-a-service-pack-606864
http://smarterware.org/3071/fine-ill-say-it-snow-leopard-is-ultimately-a-service-pack
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/technology/personaltech/27pogue.html?_r=1
Also windows 7 boasts more NEW features from Vista than Snow Leopard does to Leopard. Here are just 7:
1. Multi-touch in Win 7
With touch technology becoming the latest trend after Apples revolutionary multi-touch iPhone, Windows 7 has multi-touch for all the supported hardware. HP Touchsmart series is one of them.
2. Aero Peek
Aero Peek allows Win 7 users to instantly make all the opened windows transparent. So let say, you want to see the weather on Windows 7 sidebar Gadget, this will be very useful.
3. New Taskbar
Windows 7 desktop will look different now because of the new taskbar. You can now reorder the opened Window buttons. It has Jump Lists feature which will allow you to access common programs very easily. And you can see the full screen preview before switching to a window.
As you can see above, Quick Launch bar and taskbar are merged together in Windows 7.
4. Games
Along with old Windows Vista games, Win 7 will have online version of Checkers, Spades and Backgammon. If you remember, recently there was a new robot game Tinker on Vista. This was a part of Vista Ultimate.
5. Media Center
Win 7 comes with enhanced Media Center experience. It will have Internet TV which will telecast MSN channels by default and will have a desktop sidebar gadget for the same too.
6. NetBook Edition
Netbooks are the light weight portable laptops used for browsing, email etc. It seems that by this year end well see Netbooks by every major Brand like HP, Dell, Sony etc. Windows 7, apart from Ultimate Edition and Business edition will also have Netbook Edition. Though, of course itll be a stripped down version.
7. Performance and User Friendliness
Windows 7 will tremendously reduce the time to install an app. Also, now Windows will be less annoying with very less UAC prompt. For developers also, Win7 will reduce the time taken for developing Windows app. |

Vista is a piece of crap. It's literally a burden. The reason that Windows 7 is coming out is BECAUSE vista is so bad. I use Vista on my pc laptop, and have used panther, Leopard and now snow leopard (SL). (I have also used 7 a fair amount)
You can't compare the two 'upgrades'. By comparison, yes, SL certainly would seem like a service pack. But I liken it to an F1 car. When Ferrari announces it has a whole new, re-designed car for the racing season and you take one look at it and say "WTF? that looks just like the old one!" it doesn't mean it's not a whole new car.
If you go from a Indian Tata cabbie special to Ford, you definitely have a whole new car. It's easy to tell. But it's easy to tell because your old one was a total piece of crap. If you go from a Benz CLS to a CL, the cars look very similar, but their different. And not just by 30 grand.
So, in short,
Windows Vista= tata
Windows 7 = Ford (albeit a nice ford)
Apple Leopard= CLS benz
Apple SL= CL Benz
For the record, I am kind of disappointed in SL. I was expecting more. I just don't think this is a good comparison you are quoting/making. |

| Actually with Snow Leopard your getting quite alot, and it's the most advanced version of the operating system. How much would you have to pay to upgrade from vista to windows 7 ultimate? Over 200 dollars! |
how about $49. that is the upgrade price.
go back to the salt mines fanboy. |
How about 45,000 Won ($38.46) as stated clearly on apple.co.kr. |

I was talking about the vista to windows 7 upgrade price, not apples. he was claiming the windows upgrade price is over $200. its only over $200 if you wait or buy it new.
A lot of people are getting it free depending on who your manufacturer is. |

Taken from that article:

Once a system administrator provides setup details, your companys Microsoft Exchange address book, e-mail and calendar can show up in the Macs own address book, e-mail and calendar programs, right alongside your own personal information. Thats irony for you: the Mac now has Exchange compatibility built in, but Windows itself does not.
There are hundreds more little tweaks. In all, Apple says that more than 90 percent of Leopards 1,000 software chunks were revised or polished. Many are listed on Apple's site, but I kept finding more undocumented surprises until the deadline for this column. Just little stuff. Like: When you rename an icon on an alphabetically sorted desktop, it visibly slides into its new alphabetic position so you can see where it went.
Despite all of this, the haters online deride Snow Leopard as a service pack nothing more than a bug-fix/security-patch update like the ones Microsoft periodically releases for Windows.
Thats a pretty uninformed wisecrack. Especially because the biggest changes in Snow Leopard are under the hood, completely invisible, but responsible for some big speed and stability advances. |
