my buddy had a job lined up, but his visa was denied because he was arrested back in the day for underage drinking and a fake ID (apparently it was the ID which was the problem). His passport has been marked, and he has been told he cannot work in Korea at all.
Does anyone know if he can still enter on a visitor visa? |

Yes.
And if he waits awhile and gets a new, unmarked passport, he might be able to reapply as long as he gets his CBC from a different state/province. All he needs to do is use an out-of-state address of a friend/relative and he might have another chance later. |

why would Korea require background criminal checks on tourist visas? do you know of any countries that requires this? |

OP, sorry I can't answer your question, but why not tell your friend to call the local Korean embassy and ask? Otherwise, the new passport idea might work for a tourist visa. When I was home on holiday I had to call the K Embassy and ask a visa question, and they gave me a surprisingly straight and simple answer.

Off the original topic, but I believe (don't know for sure), that immigration are now requiring national criminal checks now from the US. My boss was telling me that we were expecting some new teachers in at the start of October, but they've been delayed because immigration just changed the rules and the new employees had to apply for new CBCs. Might be worth looking at for anyone hoping to get around previous violations by getting their check through a different state. For Australia, we're required to get a federal check, so it would make sense for immigration to require the same from all countries. |

He could definitely get a 90-day entry stamp at the airport that would allow him to come to Korea or he could apply for a C-3 tourist visa stamp at the embassy that will allow him a chance to come to Korea for up to 90 days at a time, which is good for 5 years.
But he won't be able to get a work visa if he uses his "marked" passport and as others have mentioned, it is very ill-advisable to seek out part-time work, especially at the moment, unless he wants to get fined, deported and balcklisted from entering Korea for 5 years. |

- i don't know, hence the question.
do you know of any countries that requires this?
- i don't make it a concern of mine to find out visa issuance procedures for most countries. I would guess a few do though.
why would you even respond? |
