I am in a new school and the co-teacher leaves the class after 3 minutes and returns at the end. Not such a big deal but this one kid tried to take charge and I ended up giving him the boot. Then he started to disrupt the class while he was in the hall, so I had to freak out on him. I usually teach all middle school girls so don't have much experience with middle school boys and find them annoying. At the end of it I was just thinking it was great I get to play bad cop while the co-teacher drinks coffee and sits in another room.

Happens to me all the time. The co-teacher comes in, students behave, but once he leaves the kids cause the loudest ruckus.

My co-teacher might as well not come in since he leaves me with a much rowdier class.

Drag the kid into the Kymoshill( Teachers staff room) by the ear and let your Korean co- teacher know you don't intend to teach solo if that student doesn't behave properly. Once the Korean teacher realizes that he/she can't catch up on her administartive work because of one student that kid will catch hell.

Tell your co-teacher that by Korean law you must have a Korean teacher in the room with you at all times... Then back that up by suggesting that the next time he/she leaves the class, you will send the class back to their homeroom...
Only had to do that once and my CT got the point Laughing

I've got the same problem with my slider. He used to try and leave the room for the whole class - so I just stopped teaching - and followed him down the hall and asked him to come back.

Now, he just slips out during the most important part of the lesson (student centred group work). He hides in my adjacent teachers' office and rings his bookie etc. I go and get him for all classroom instructions-and to direct the class when the lesson is changing format.

It's a shame. Basically, the 2 & 3 graders in this school are losing 2 very important years of English instruction - but that's not my problem. Everyone knows that a 45+ Korean male can do anything they want - they don't have to worry about the kids education - just their test scores.

Sparkling.

When I worked public school this drove me nuts too. My 6th grade co-teacher kept leaving the room to talk on his phone. I'd hear him in the hall and he'd go out there several times in a period.

My 5th grade co-teacher had sick leave for a few months because she had cancer (she recovered fully). While she was gone the homeroom teachers were supposed to stay with me, but what they very often did was leave the classroom before I got there. I would then go to the various staff rooms trying to find them, which embarrassed them like crazy (but it worked).

Nice one! Also, I wouldn't stick the kid in the hall--they think that's a reward. Get him to stand with his arms in the air and bent over facing the wall for a minute or two. Then invite the kid to sit back down.

In my school the VP's desk is in the center of the teacher's office. I've seen Korean teachers walk students into the office and have them sit in front of the VP's desk. Man the look on those kid's faces.

I've been at the same (mostly technical) high school for five years, and I've found plenty of ways to deal with rowdy students.

Generally, I've found it best to be friendly with them, and if someone wants to "take charge" I sometimes let him play the role of teacher and try to conduct the class.

I think a couple times they did at least as good as me ... Cool

If I'm trying to teach something that requires the co-teacher's help but he's gone, I'll more-often-than not put on a vid from my (by now) extensive DVD library.
