I need a new tower. Should i buy one at Yongsan or should i just order one from a US seller with a Korean distributor. Should those sellers at Yongsan even be trusted? Thanks. |

When you say a new tower, do you need a new case, or a whole new Desk Top PC?
Yes, you can generally trust Yongsan. |

Just bought a netbook (Toshiba NB200) at Yongsan Electronics Market for 650,000 last week. Cheaper than gmarket, way more expensive than the U.S. though, but hey that's what I get.
Aside from the HUGE hassle of getting English Windows XP on it (thanks jackdaniels) due to the vendor not doing it for me and having no CD drive, I'm very happy with my purchase.
I encountered some very helpful vendors who all tried very hard to help me despite the language barrier. Even if they didn't have what I was looking for, they would show me where or tell me what's available elsewhere. There were only a few who had the "I want yo moneyz" vibe, but most seemed genuine. |

Related Question:
I'd like to obtain a gaming quality PC in Korea, but I've heard that graphics cards are really expensive over there. Would it be a good idea to buy one here, then bring it with me? Would I have any problems finding a Desktop in Yongsan that would work with this graphics card? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102824 |

I made a computer on danawa, printed the paper and went to yongsan. I was lucky enough to find a shop where a Bangledeshi guy with guy english worked, but it was not necessary. I watched as the guy behind the counter called multiple places and the items were brought in. They even verified things with me. Then I watched my computer be put together. It was sort of a pain to haul the whole thing including monitor home on the subway and bus though. I recommend bringing a friend to split the load. |

I can only say that my laptop (a Samsung NC10) was cheaper on GMarket than at Yongsan, by about 50,000 won. |

No problem.
As is often the case though, a new crop of graphics cards are just around the corners. The ATI HD5800 and HD5700 series. Their introduction sometime after September will drive down the price of older generation cards like the HD4850...........well, in the USA anyway.............not by much in Korea, where computer part prices are kept pretty high until the part is taken off the market. |

Bring a graphics card over with you. They're crazy-priced in Korea. Run your mouse over the little icon photos a few inches from the top to choose specific cards:

CPU's tend to be more expensive, as well. |

Midrange mainstream gaming stuff is affordable. Top end is rather steep, if you can even find them. |

8 gigs of ram is overkill unless you are going to be rendering videos or something. As far as I know, not even the HIGHEST end games need that much. If you are going to have like 12 tabs open in your browser, iTunes playing music, watching a movie in VLC or WMP, downloading via BitTorrent, AND playing a super high end game, you MIGHT need 8 gigs, but probably not. |

If you really don't want to upgrade in the near future, then you'll have to decide now whether or not to spend the little extra for the Intel X58 or X55 motherboard and an i7 or i5 CPU to go with it.
Building with i7 or i5 will push the price up by about 40%.....but you'll be futureproof, well, for about 5 years anyway, and you'll get a lovely fast machine.
Your decision. |
