Does anyone have any idea how to send large files and folders over the internet? ive got pictures and videos of my parents trip in the summer to send to them but am unsure of the best way. theres about 3 gigs in total but i put them all in an rar file (1.5g) with view to sending them via skype however this was unsuccessful. sending them via email isnt really an option as it would take forever and too many emails. any help or advice would be much appreciated.
thanks

If you have a MAC, no problem. Use iCtat or iDisk.

If no Mac, use Pando. Both the sender and recipient need to download it on their computers, and install it. Still, it will only give 1gig for free.

It might be better if you just burned them as a DVD. Then mailed it.

Your parents might appreciate something they can just pop in the DVD player and enjoy right away without any tech hassles.

You could make it into a torrent and send them the torrent file.

thanks for all the info. sounds like there are a few different options out there. i think theyd get their heads around installing a program more qiuckly than opening an rar file so that sounds like the best bet. doi any of the programs allow a collection of files and folders as opposed to one big file?
cheers

dropbox acts just like a folder on your computer in your my documents folder. You can also double click the icon in your task bar to open the folder and then it a simple matter of copy and paste

You could 2 ways that nobody has offered up. You could try trying to send it with IM program. I know it's not the best option but it's pretty reliable. Also you can try to setup a FTP and who ever wants it could log in and get the files you/or other party wants.

If, you're gonna go with the bittorrent route, that will allow you put put everything into one folder and transfer that folder. It also has the benefit of allowing your parents to choose which files they want to download first within the folder.

It also is reliable in that if your connections fail, the downloads can resume again later without any problems.

If can can't work out how to use it by yourself, yell out and I or someone else here will be able to help you.

Use a gmail drive if it's just for photographs and small movies. Works pretty much like that drop box but you can share whole folders and it just uploads them in the background. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMail_Drive

Live Mesh is another really good option for sharing files over the internet.

From mesh.com :

Quote:

With Live Mesh, you can synchronize files with all of your devices, so you always have the latest versions handy. Access your files from any device or from the web, easily share them with others, and get notified whenever someone changes a file.

Working on one computer, but need a program from another? No problem. Use Live Mesh to connect to your other computer and access its desktop as if you were sitting right in front of it*.

*This feature is good for getting around your school's firewall.
