BUG Review
Just across from Central Station in an old ornate building, this Base hostel has tons of character. The old rickety heritage listed lift leads up to brightly coloured floors with spacious dorms. The Down Under Bar & Grill is a popular watering hole/nightclub, so expect a big party here most nights. They also offer cheap breakfast, happy hour, and pool tables. The hostel has a rooftop barbecue area with excellent views of the city, a large clean kitchen, an internet caf, a job desk and a tour desk. Security is very good and the reception is open 24 hours. Since this (and the Embassy) is now a Base hostel, they are adding the Sanctuary- girls only dorms with special conveniences.

Price
Dorm bed $25-28 ($24-27 VIP)
Single room $45 ($44 VIP)
Double room $65 ($63 VIP)

BUG Review
This high-security hostel has a very low-key atmosphere compared to the Base Brisbane Palace Central, just two blocks away. Like the other Base hostel it has a great location, but has a more mature feel. The hostel is clean and modern, with nice furnishings and all the fittings. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the dorms are comfortable. The cinema room is beautiful, with plush pillows and a huge screen. They also have a good rooftop barbecue area with great city views. Reception staff are very nice and helpful.

Price
Dorm bed $27-30 ($26-29 VIP)
Single room $75-89 ($74-88 VIP)
Double room $75-89 ($74-88 VIP)
Twin room $75 ($73 VIP)
Prices are in Australiian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.

There are 3 pages of hostels to choose from, in Brisbane alone. I doubt you've stayed in every one of them, DD, & some of the reviews are quite good.

I found the cost of transport, hotels & food MUCH dearer in Japan. eg 7500 Yen a night for a Hotel, 3500 yen for a hostel. Europe is even more expensive.

Still talking about backpackers are we? This just in 37 students sharing one house in Brisbane get busted. Expensive rates made them share.

Totally irrelevant. Kiwis are tenacious, as well as having sharp claws. Students have little or no disposable income, unlike the OP.

Heh I am not a kiwi , but I did live there for 6 months and rent was even worse in Auckland than Ausssie back in 2003. hen the Aussie home owners got the great idea to get the tenants to pay of their morgages.

I've just spotted a sale on kangsantravel for Australia. Doing a quick search on this forum and Australia doesn't sound overly appealing. What's the deal? Should I go to Philippines etc. instead?

The offer is:

SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, BRISBANE, ADELAID, PERTH
365, 000 excl. tax etc.

How is the cost of traveling in Australia compared with Korea etc.? Basically, I like beaches, nature and sunny weather. I can tolerate culture, history etc., it's not a deal breaker for me though.

Hi There,

Not saying DD doesn't have a point but I think with an open mind things can be planned that don't cost the earth. In my case the last time I needed to travel from Brisbane to Sydney for a conference I stayed at the Y on the park. This place was central, hyde park, excellent facilities basic breakfast provided etc. I got an excellent rate reserving online. There are Y's in every city.

It is a trick in Brisbane. Specials can be found on the net for accommodation if you are lucky. The last one I saw was for a place near King George Square.

For an extended visit or sightseeing though because distances are vast some people just rent a wicked campervan.

Traditionally it was a country of adventure.... if you go with just a little dough, getting together with others, being willing to camp at times and flexibility can help.
