I know there's a ton of CELTA threads but I'm going to start a new one:
I have two years of experience, and an ESL/Linguistics minor (enough to qualify me for an ESL endorsement in my home state should I get a education cert of some sort) . I'd like to get into teaching adults, esp. business english, cuz I'm sick of teaching kids. Also, in Asia but not Korea (Japan, China, etc), cuz I'm sick of that too.
I'm looking into the various further education in ESOL, especially Cambridge. I know that they have different levels at Cambridge (ICELT, TKT, CELTA)--I'll call these "C" level for lack of a better term--for those without experience. Also there are DELTA modules for those with some experience (modules 1 2 3 etc).
Question 1: Are the ICELT, TKT, or CELTA really going to boost my standing with 2 years of teaching elementary kids and my ESL minor if I want to step up to adults? I almost feel like they might be redundant in terms of marketability, not necessarily skill set.
Question 2: Could I jump over the "C" level courses and go straight to the DELTA modules without getting CELTA, TKT, ICELT? It seems like Module 2 would be nice but I wonder if they will let me focus on adults without any previous experience teaching adults.
Question 3: What about a MA in Linguistics? Seeing as how it's 4 times the cost in most cases, does it open that many more doors in the long term?
Any insight is appreciated thank you all ^_^ |

Dear Brooksmatic,
You might consider the Trinity IBET Certificate in terms of developing an English for international business teaching orientation. There is an online option which I have considered recently which seems reasonable in terms of pricing and timing. Their next course begins October 1st and while they usually require CELTA completion you might contact them for details.

Question 1 - TKT is just a test. ICELT is meant for non-native speakers of English - CELTA is what is applicable to you. In Korea, it might help your marketability slightly. It will help your teaching a lot.
Question 2 - Most centers will want you to have the CELTA before the DELTA, but I know of people (in the past) who did not have the DELTA but had other relevant qualifications. I took the DELTA (a long time ago) and some people on the course didn't have the CELTA - and most of them failed the exams on the first try. The DELTA has changed a lot since then, though.
Info about the DELTA:

Question 3 - If you want to get a better job in Korea, get an MA TESOL/Applied Linguistics. If you want to be a better teacher, get a CELTA & DELTA. Or do both. |

Thanks for the info, Penguin. I do NOT want to teach in Korea any longer, I'm looking into China or Japan, and ONLY adults, preferably business, which is why the IBET looks like a good deal.
I'd imagine not a lot of people know what the deal is in those other two countries and I should probably ask this question on other boards, but if anybody has two cents to throw in it'd be nice. |
