Originally I wanted to go to Japan, but I was unable to get an extra day off so I was thinking of some within-Korea ideas. Would Ulleungdo be a bad idea over Chuseok? Or would it even be possible to get ferry tickets and all that?

Any information is appreciated.

Great Island. Check the weather and get a Korean speaker to phone the ferry terminal. If there is a typhoon all transpotation to and from the Island is canceled until the storm passes.

Take a ferry around the Island fantastic view. A small boat comes by with some inexpensive raw Sashimi and soju. At night you can find a cozy place in the rocks and eat raw shellfish and sea Urchins and drink soju.

i saw that earlier, but it looks like they leave from seoul and i wouldn't be able to get down there that night.

are you involved with the trip at all?

i guess it may be best to call who ever is organizing it.

I'm not involved, but I wanted to go on it. I'm doing Seoraksan instead. Still, it looks like one of the cooler trips you could do in Korea.

It's a great trip but, as someone else pointed out, bad weather means no boat, so you could easily get stuck there. You really don't need a prearranged tour. I don't know where you are located but I got the boat at Donghae, which is about a half hour south of Gangneung. There are 2 or 3 boats everyday. I got there the night before and bought a ticket for the next morning, and that was in August, peak season. It doesn't seem to be that popular a destination. Don't know why. I thought it was a beautiful place.

I went to Ulleungdo last year. Highly recommended. The boat departs from Mukho Harbor just north of Donghae. I had to waitlist, as I hadn't booked but got on business class, for about 55k five mins before departure. I booked the return ticket at Dodong Pier. Had a weak typhoon pass overhead one day, but I wasn't trapped on the island. The people that went to Dokdo that day were seasick.

There's also a local bus that goes almost right round the island then returns the same way it came to Dodong. (The final bit of road was still under construction). Bus timetables are available at Dodong Pier Info Booth.
