I was wondering what my chances were of getting turned down by EPIK. Is anyone familiar with their process? Or have any tips? If it helps I'm 22, female and just graduated with a BA. |

If you're not a natural blond, dye your hair before getting your picture taken (this will make you a better English teacher) ; and if you're beautiful, your chances of being turned down are almost zero. |

1) Check your pulse. Do you have one?
2) Hold a mirror in front of your mouth and see if you can fog it up.
If yes, you have a job with EPIK. |

I have heard EPIK are only setting level 1& 2 applicants for interviewing in first rounds from now on because they had so many applicants last time.
With this application rule in place anyone with only a bachelor degree may miss out on getting in, even if they are 'blonde and pretty' |

I worked for a EPIK a long time ago (96-9 . From the orientation, it didn't look like they had turned anyone down. The original plan was to hire 1000 native speakers with MAs in the field but that didn't work out too well as you can imagine. So, they had to scramble at the last minute to fill half those slots with people who had little to no experience. I'm happy to say that things have changed very little over the years!

Level 2 is any bachelor degree with:
TESOL cert 100hrs
or min one year of full time English teaching
or degree in English Lit/ English Language/ Linguistics
During last summer's SMOE fiasco, 2450 interviewed and 550 were hired. Getting an online TESOL cert isn't that hard.
If EPIK allows online-TESOL-certification then the econo 'fugee-yama landslide will be just as devastating the second time. |

looks like i slipped in right before the tsunami of applicants and Korea's ESL saturation. Sucks for the rest of them. |

Epik are rejecting applicants over 40 this year. It would also help if you're North American (Canada / USA) & not overweight. |

There has been no tsunami of applicants... that's only what they want you to believe.
Ask yourself -
Why are there immediate openings in virtually every POE? Would not these positions be filled (except for the odd, no-show or 'runner') if things were at saturation level?
Certainly, the number of applicants (for this term) increased. However, the vast majority of these were to SMOE. These facts combined with typical, Korean 'lack of planning' resulted in 100 people being 'hired' by SMOE... then told they don't have a job (after they procured visas and paid for flights).
Everyone put two and two together... and came up with five. Throughout the country, EPIK has never been able to fill all the available positions; and even with the increase in applicants, they still can't. However, they're not stupid and will do nothing to dissuade people (recruiters and potential NETs) of the mistaken belief the market is 'saturated'. After all, it's to their advantage to allow the belief that supply outstrips demand - thus keeping wages static and the waegooken 'in line'. |

It is puzzling to be sure. Why aren't the EPIK positions filled? Did the 100 chop-offs reject the rural jobs? Perhaps the avalanche only wants to hit Seoul. |

Bingo!
P.S. Just besause one is not in Seoul, doesn't mean they're 'rural' (although some will disagree).
I worked for two years in truly rural K-land - a mile from my apartment to the nearest village... pop. 1100 (including the pigs). Now, I'm in a 'big city' of about 140K... and it's heaven! A friend (from New York) couldn't handle a K-city of .5 mil. because it was "too small".
Each to their own.

I stand corrected. And btw I took a job with in an suburban area, they were dying to take me in. I think it's the same deal with lawyers and pharmacists in the US. It's not saturated but people just dont want to take jobs outside the big city, they would rather live in poverty than take the rural job |

white, north american and under 35
ill have no problems getting a job if you fit these criteria. If you're attractive then you'll have to beat the employers away. |

Most of the new EPIK tachers in my area do not fit that image.
What I've heard more and more is that schools want to hire a good teacher.
I'm not going to re-sign as an EPIK teacher for next year. I know for sure that my both of my schools hope that my replacement is a good teacher, who they don't have to supervise and guide 100% of the time. And both of my schools are going to apply to have their own full-time NET, so I wish both of my replacements well.
My co-teacher at my circulating school is the 교육부장, academic director. She is so busy that I don't see her hardly at in the afternoons, so I am left alone to work on the next day's lessons. Last Friday, she came in late to the first morning class, which I started without her, and proceeded to play the previous lessson's cd-rom dialog. She likes to use the cd-rom curriculum, so we do, but I had to tell her quietly that we were playing the wrong dialog. She didn't even know exactly where we were in the textbook, but I did.
Some schools may not care and will be very happy to hire an attractive but inexperienced newbie, whom they will fret over because they don't know what to do most of the time, but other schools want more than looks. They want some one who will bring added value to their English classes and classroom. The answer may be that there is room in EPIK for both the mythical pretty blond and the less attractive but capable NET, who doesn't have to be led by the hand all of the time. |
