Saw it today, it was okay...after watching it though, it seems like it would be a little irritating to a person who's never been here. Funnier to a person who's lived here for a while, and a little bit funnier to one of those who knows Korean to a certain extent.
Come on Mr. Pink, you have to agree that the level test scene in the beginning was pretty good... |
Just watched the movie today, and have to agree with this, more or less. Only foreigners who've gotten to know how Korea functions in relation to English would really get many of the humorous bits.
I did like the movie, though. It wasn't terribly serious about itself, which was good. I also liked the bit at the end where some of the actors were talking about themselves and their future plans. The business dude who's really a taxi driver was pretty damn cool.
I thought the teacher chick had horrible pronunciation, though. Definite Aussie accent in her Korean. I don't expect her to lose that just for a lil' ol' movie, but I wouldn't praise her for having amazing Korean or anything. |

I finally saw it Friday night, and I really liked it. Mithridates is right. The level test scene (both of them, actually) was too f'ing funny.
There's an interview with Angela Kelly (the Aussie who played Catherine), on the second disc of the DVD. She doesn't speak Korean, and learned the lines just for the movie. She did pick up a little bit while she was in Korea, and rattled off a few phrases during the interview.
What struck me a bit odd was how little she was in any of the stuff on the second disc. She was at a few of the premieres, but if she spoke at any of them, they cut those bits out.
Also, some of the supplemental stuff was very poorly produced. They went with her to the airport when she was leaving Korea, and the camera they were filming with was either very bad or completely mis-calibrated. Many of those shots are almost totally whited-out from the sun and other lighting. (It looks like DV footage with the camera set up for shooting under flourescent lights, but the sunlight just totally overwhelmed the camera.) They made no effort to correct any of that footage before putting the DVD together, and that's just shoddy workmanship.

Not to sound self-centered (but I am American and maybe that can't be helped...) I was surprised they chose an Australian girl to be in the movie as well, starring as the English teacher. Was she the best for the part, or did the director want nothing to do with Americans and chose someone else? |
Angela Kelly talks about this in the interview. She says the director went to Australia looking for a "typical western girl." There was no mention of why he wanted an Aussie over an American, though. (Probably didn't matter since we all look alike anyways. ) Also, she talked about how at first she didn't agree with some of the stuff her character was doing, but then they explained to her that rather than being a "true" westerner, Catherine was supposed to be more typical of how many Koreans think westerners really are. Once it was explained to her that way, she went with it. Sure, she could've used that as an excuse to challenge Korean stereotypes, but it was her first feature film and I doubt she wanted to screw it up.
I guess the only stereotype she challenged was the "all westerners are from America" one. |

Oh, something I forgot to mention. I thougth the best line in the movie came when Youngju was on the bus, headed to her first English class. She thinks to herself, "Everybody's obsessed with English. What's wrong with being born in Korea and just knowing Korean?"
Even though the obsession provides for my job, I sometimes wonder the same thing. |

Nothing wrong with it, just means you can't move up the ladder of success in this country. If you want to live in the country and farm, go for it.
I still think that movie was horrible.
YMCA baseball was worse though. |

But why base a person's chances of success on their English ability if they're not going to be using English in their job? I had adult students who stressed over TOEIC tests because they had to get a certain score to be considered for certain jobs. Yet those jobs were never going to require them to use English. What's the point?

Perhaps the employers look at the skills required to get a good English grade (ie focus, attention, desire to improve oneself) more than needing the ability for the job. Successfully studying a foreign language demonstrates the applicant has been dedicated to something and succeeded in it - bodes well for that person to be a good employee for the company. |

Mildly amusing if you're an ESL teacher. Other than that, maybe the crappest Korean film I've seen yet. no mu seollong
Chiwaseon, class Korean period film.

Hello. Can someone please help me?
I'm back in the States right now, and I would like to see this movie with English subtitles.
My understanding is that the one at overnet doesn't have English subtitles.
Would anyone care to make a deal here?
Thanks. |

One day, I will be required to "fluently"(according to a test) speak French to work at AT&T, right?
P.S.-I'm not from Quebec.
Oh yea...anybody who thinks this movie is bad should watch the first Jopok Manura, and then immediately watch Jopok Manura 2, and tell me that the sequel wasn't the biggest turd to float down the Han in Korean film history.
Seriously, I've watched better robo-cartoons on the cartoon channel than that hunk of ass refuse. |

If the chance to learn French to a certain level is so freely and widely available to the general population at that time in the future, and you've proven that you have a dedicated attitude to persevere with the task in hand to get the grade required then I wouldn't be surprised if it stood you in better stead than other applicants who hadn't done it. |

Amen to that! I watched them back to back this weekend. I'd bought part 1 at Carrefour (DVD barbain bin for 9,900) and rented the second one. The first one was really cool, and I was surprised at such a strong female character in a Korean movie. The second one was indeed craptacular. Let's make it wacky and zany! And when we do have a fight scene, we'll make it just like the first movie. Not to mention that they totally ruined her character. If the character had been male, I'd say they castrated him. Not sure how to describe it for a woman though.
I'm just glad I didn't have the purchase/rental reversed on this pair. |

Yeah, that one was like watching paint dry. Almost put a hole in Song Kang-ho's career, but popping up and milking the Anti-American protests for populartiy a while back kept him afloat. That and SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE and MEMORIES OF A MURDER.
