My university offers something called a combined major and my diploma lists, "Communication/English, Journalism Emphasis" as my major. Do you think this degree would count as an English degree as far as pay scales are concerned? Thanks for the help!

With what schools?

I don't think it would, but it would mean your resume looks better than someone with a degree in something not related to English or Journalism.

Pay raises based on degree usually come to those who are certified as a state teacher back home.

Level 2 is degree in English Literature/ English Lanugage/ Linguistics.
Your diploma probably falls under English Language bracket. It's a vey iffy area, that. They'd probably classify you according to your former profession. What did you do with that degree? Teaching? Publishing? Journalism?

I wish I could get a job specific to my degree here! Wink My previous job was as an assessment administrator for a university. I guess I'll just cross my fingers that they accept my degree as "English language" and roll with the punches.

I dun't think they'd accept it. But, knowing it makes a world of difference. There's two types of English. Academic and Journalistic English. Academic is much more technical and Journalistic English is more business, conversation oriented, and much easier to understand.

I wish I was you. I've got academic English down pretty good. But it confuses the hell out of my kids. I've started studying the Thesaurus every night to notch down my vocabulary.

EG: I usually use "Type" when describing variation. And it took me most of the month to get in the habit of saying "Kind of" instead.
