It was originally called StarOffice, Sun Microsystem's main form of competition against MS's suite, but a couple of years ago they branched off and this is the open source branch of things. An extremely capable productivity package.

When I first tried StarOffice a few years ago (1999-2000), it tried to completely take over my whole desktop and mask Windows. It looked like my computer was being swallowed by an alien program. I had no end of trouble trying to work Windows and StarOffice functions at the same time. Also, StarOffice was around 150MB at the time; 602 Office Suite used much less memory. Sounds like StarOffice has improved.

Well, yeah, it's no longer StarOffice. It's gone opensource, so any of that intrusive stuff has gone the way of the dodo.
