Hey all!
I have years of experience teaching in R.O.K. and also a recent Master of TESOL degree. I was approached by a Korean businessman in Seoul who wants me to "help" his partner who is opening up a school in the U.S.A. They'd like me to be a sort of part-time director, with my input, not to mention that they want to advertise my name and Master in TESOL to get students to go over from Korea. Do you think I should ask for a cut? What percentage? Thanks! (yes, I'll be in the U.S. then)
Happy teacher who is not that street smart |

I would say no deal unless you get the directors position, with the power of purse. You control the school, the hiring, curriculum development, class scheduling, etc. No deal, if you don't get real authority. As too pay, I would be less inclined to really know. But get control, or no deal, and give your self a back door out of the place if your Korean partner gets weird on you. |

I've been in Korea now for eight years. If you want to waste a lot of your free time and listen forever to what you will get once they start making money then go ahead. Unless you are married into a Korean family and are doing business within the family forget it. Just tell them you want so much per hour for your help on a weekly bases and watch them vanish. Koreans are nice as friends and some are good to work for but doing business with them is a fools paradise. |

For once I agree with Anda.
Do not do business with Koreans.
If they can take advanrage of you, they will.
And YES, I will make sweeping general statements about Koreans because I have seen and heard faaaaar too many stories about westerners getting the shaft up the backside from corrupt Korean businessmen. |

You can't trust a korean business partner. The majority of the time, you'll loose. Even in the U.S., koreans are not good business partners. Lack of quality control, lack of customer service, lack of pride in workmanship, and screw over you are korean business ethics. Am I bad mouthing koreans? Yes I am! But they also do a good job of it themselves without even speaking! |

Amen to that.
Where is the customer service in this country. Takes days to get a simple request like getting cable hooked up or a cell phone fixed.
And I should forget shotty hagwon directors who wait until the last minute to call someone to fix a business machine or help you with a problem.
If we were in the west, we'd just make a phone call and it would be done in the span of just a day.
God I miss home.
Peace out. |

I figure I am worth about 12 million won a month...but thats just my over-inflated self evaluation.
Or it could be I am worth a dime...it varies
As for services....ever try getting the cable guy to come to your house in a reasonable delay back home?
Now they give you: " he will be at your home in 3 weeks, on this date between 7am and 8pm"
Yeah thats real service.... |

I say about 50 cents. But that's just a guess in the wind. |
