Koreans in general aren't very open minded, so I'd keep it to myself if I was you.
Just a question, why make an issue of it at all? can't you function in normal society without having to explain your sexuality for no apparent reason?
I'm sure there are gay scenes in Seoul, just hunt them out and live your life, no need to flaunt your sexual orientation. |
Yeah I completely missed this comment the first go-round. What a jerk. Seriously, how is asking if he can be "out" in Korea "flaunting" his sexual orientation?
What a load of BS. Why is it only gay people who can "flaunt" their sexuality and never straight people?

I have met a few dudes out in Daegu who were openly gay. I doubt there Hakwons knew about it, but they lived outside of work the same as they did back home and Daegu is much more conservative than Seoul and Busan.
If you have confidence in this country and let the silent judgment bullets bounce off you through the shield of not giving a crap what dumbasses think, then you'll be just fine. If you are concerned about harassment, if old man yell at you, it's not because you are gay. Hardly anyone will start a fight, just maybe have a weird freakout screaming temper tantrum on the street and again, it'll won't be due to you being gay, but rather due to you being foreign.
The job, I'd keep it under wraps. They think alot of the same crap Americans thought in the 50's. That gay folks are hopped up on crack and pot and run around the outskirts of town like a pack of wild dogs constantly searching for rape victims. In other words, they are misinformed, easily duped idiots who don't even try to question ugly stereotypes when they hear them. So, I'd stay quiet at work simply because it's not worth getting screwed out of your bonus or return ticket. |

I don't think it's a problem as long as you don't tell your boss or students or yell out from rooftops...
I've met my fair share of gay teachers and gay koreans....gay koreans were very direct(and typically hit on me).
BTW, the gay scene is in itaewon from what I know as well as the gay clubs...
I wouldn't worry about it...enjoy.... |

Yeah, I tried to have this conversation with my dad. It didn't go very far. I tend to ignore homophobic people...takes too much willpower to engage. |

Well, to be quite honest I would rather that no individual straight or gay flaunt anything of their sexual nature around me. It's none of my business and to be honest there are way more productive things to talk about. 50% of the gay people I knew were totally normal and could carry on a converesation without making references to gay sex in some way shape or form. The other 50% felt the need to expound upon every lurid detail of their sexual nature. I haven't found any straight people who behaved in a like manner. |

I really don't enjoy being around couples, straight or gay, who have the need to make out or focus all their attention on each other in clearly amorous ways--when in public. Just get a room. When I think of straight people flaunting their sexuality, I think of sex addicts. When I think of gay people flaunting their sexuality, I think of exhibitionists. Either way, they're annoying and obnoxious. I really couldn't care less about their sexual orientation otherwise. |

Your experience does not equal the entire world.
In my experience, straight people tell me the craziest sex jokes, or openly flirt by making overt references to body parts and sex acts with other people in the bar/club/etc. Other straight (usually men) would always ask me about *beep* size and whether I liked anal sex and blah blah blah. This. Happens. All. The. Time. It's happened here. Unfortunately.
Did we somehow cancel each other out because my experience didn't mirror yours?
LOL, no. |

Well, obviously you're just making your experiences up!!!
No but seriously...I don't know about the individuals on this thread, so I won't speak for them. But I know a lot of people who think that talking about one's gay partner or referencing a romantic date (or even - especially - picketing or rallying for equal rights) is "flaunting" homosexuality.
To these people I say.... |

as Mr Susan points out, unless you openly proclaim your homosexuality in Korea, how the hell would they ever KNOW?
all of the behavior that would be placed on the gay side of the ledger in the West is perfectly normal, acceptable and commonplace in Korea.
like men holding hands.. looking and acting effeminately. You can even get drunk and grope another guy at noreabang.
If I were a gay man and was afraid of coming out or being found out, living in Korea would be pure heaven.
kabrams.. can you bring back the last avatar?

both! if that's your grandma in the 60's style photo with that funky cap..
I totally dig her!
go and tell her she was hot!
btw Reise..(and hot granny's granddaughter)
clever intellectual gambit, equating acting out one's heterosexuality to acting out one's homosexuality.
the only problem with that attempt is that 85-90% of the general population is straight and many are "uncomfortable" with overt acting out of the other 10-15% (perhaps they shouldn't be, but they are)
therein lies the rubs. Perhaps in a perfect world, there should be complete equivalence. I for one, don't give a rat's behind what a person does behind one's walls...but yes.. I am more uncomfortable with flagrant displays of public affection among gays than straights..
maybe I shouldn't be - Wish I wasn't.. but I am. |

At least you're honest.
But I dare say people would have less of a problem if I kissed my girlfriend in a bar than if a man kissed his boyfriend.
Double standards, and all. |

Im so camp i ping gaydars round the other side of the planet and ill tell you this: i will never confirm nor deny my sexual orientation. Its no ones business, express yourself however you like and let people make their own assumptions, but never confirm a thing. Of course, theres no reason to be obtuse about it, just gently change the subject, or maybe bamboozle your interlocutor with discussions about polysexuality, performatives or even multiple genders (a la Semenya ). If nothing else theyll know never to ask you about it again.
Oh, and straight or gay, if you work in a public school, always assume youre the source of gossip and intrigue from your community, so if you want to play, try not to play in your own backyard. I mean you can if you like, but dont get all upset when youre the next days source of gossip at school, its pretty much your own fault. |
