So, I'm planning on leaving Chicago this coming January to teach in Korea and I was wondering how should I or have other people dealt with their bank accounts and cell phone contracts. I currently have a Chase checking and savings account and I have another year left on my cell phone contract with Verizon Wireless.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you have bills to pay in the US, you'll need to keep that checking account. I send part of my salary via wire transfers into my US bank account, which I use to make my student loan payments. |

My cable company allowed me to cancel my subscription because I moved somewhere out of their service area (Korea). Maybe that cellular phone company will do the same.
Keep a debit card (or credit card) from that US bank for when you take vacations out of Korea (to Thailand) since Korean issued cards are unreliable overseas. You can use that US bank card in Korea too, for purchases you want to make using money from your us account. |

When I came over last year my cellphone company (AT&T) let me cancel my account without penalty because I was going somewhere that they didn't serve. Once I got here I had to send them a copy of a utility bill and they dropped the cancellation fee with no issues. I'm guessing Verizon will be the same. Just call. |
