I wanted to ask, according to you guys.. Why are so many teachers in Korea unhappy! On the Korea forum there are more negative posts than positive ones and also more negative posts than on the Japan, Taiwan , China and Vietnam boards! Why are teachers soooooo unhappy?? Is there anyone that actually likes living in Korea and has been there for a while? And reason NOT being as they are married? |

My 2 cents (and probably overpriced)!! Looking at your join date here at Dave's, you may not be "in country" and are trying to do a bit of research prior to making a decision. I believe viewing this site is a very good way to try and understand what teaching may be like in S.K. Just understand that there is alot of sarcasm, alot of truth and everything in between here at Dave's.
If you are not "in country", I will put forth my pocket change. Overall, this society is not easy to adapt to. For many years, Korea has maintained an isolated stance in relation to the rest of the world. They took this stance by choice. Their history is supposedily the reason for said stance. I don't buy it!! Anyway, there are many aspects of living here that are not easy. Xenophobia is a major one. Staunch nationalism another. You can reasearch S.K. for 10 years prior to coming here and it will do nothing in comparison to living here and experiencing the culture for yourself.
Alot of it has to do with an individuals personality, experience and overall outlook on life. I believe teaching in this country has aspects that are very easy. But when you include the social aspects and everything outside of the classroom, it can dilute the simplicity considerably.
Again, there is only one way to truly find out!! Taste it for yourself!! |

Im just going to pull this out of my butt cuz i clearly dont know what im talking about. I've mentioned a bunch of times Ive never been an english teacher , never will be and its never crossed my mind to become one =p.
I know if by some miserable chance i were to become one I dont think i would be happy because teaching english isnt something i would ever want to do. I'd probably consider shooting myself in the head first... I would consider it a HUGE step backwards in my own life goals/career path. As someone who's spent a good amount of time living in korea ( non english teacher) , has a korean korean wife / parents in law ect.. I LOVE korea and i always look forward to my next visit. and im always ready to move back there and live there for a while. I've have nothing but a good experience in korea. I have to admit though, ive never had to deal with Hagwon boss, or anythign to do with teaching and that might be why? =p.
Thats not to say there arent any happy english teacher. Out of the 20 000 E2 visas im sure theres a tone of people who are extremely happy and love korea. They just have better things to do than to complain and post in this negative cesspool. I get a huge kick out of reading peoples complaints though. You've got all kinds of interesting characters on this forum that make for LOTS of good entertainment. You could say im somewhat fascinated by english teacher community because they have an interesting take on what's it like to be in korea. Which is very different than what ive experienced. The only thing that bothers me a little is that im automatically considered an english teacher the minute i set foot on korean soil because of my race =p. oh well.. |

I loved teaching in Korea. I just hated everything outside of the classroom, including dealing with the school's administration. |

yah English teaching and prostitution are the same thing? What's your job mighty man? I don't remember being asked to give a happy ending or suck on anything in my 5 years of teaching. If you are so high and mighty wtf are you doing on these boards. I find English teaching to be a very relaxing way to travel the world and even though I am leaving this profession next month I can't see how anyone would associate it with having sex with strangers. |
