I know I don't frequent this board very much, but I got a question - what's the best way to work out the love handles? What do all you exercise buffs do to get nice obliques?

Overall cardio and diet is pretty much the only way. This helps - Multiple variations of situps - crunches, side to side crunches etc. Most of all, grab a broom stick, put it on your traps, wrap your arms around it and twist your torso side to side while standing. Do a boat load every day!!!

You may want to consider "good mornings", but they are risky!!

This isn't quite accurate information. The only way to lose weight is not cardio, but rather exercise in general combined with a diet that's low in carbs. Cardio is good if you want to burn a specific number of calories, but it doesn't offer you any increase in calorie burning throughout the day, which is why weight lifting is a better choice. You burn calories when you lift, and when you put on more muscle by doing it, your body uses more calories for the muscle upkeep throughout the day. Crunches and situps will do nothing but make the abs under your belly fat bigger, which will make your potbelly bigger. Abs have nothing to do with how many situps you do and everything to do with bodyfat percentage. Losing bodyfat is the only way to get rid of love handles and to get abs, working the muscles out does nothing to help that.

The best way to specifically work the "love handle" area is to stand with a barbell of whatever weight you feel comfortable holding, and lean your torso down to the side, and lifting it back up, letting your obliques (love handles) do the work to making it move. You can also do deadlifts (do a google search) or bent-over rows.

Most of all keep in mind that working the love handles alone will never, ever make you lose the love handle fat. Trying to work out one muscle set to lose weight from the area is foolish, fat comes off from the entire body all at once. "Firming" and "toning" areas like the abs with exercises like situps and crunches are common myths that people believe. Again, it's all about bodyfat percentage. Work out your entire body - lift weights that focus on your legs, arms, back, and chest.

The greatest workout/trainer in the world will not erase lovehandles/belly unless you do the following things:

1) stop eating bread
2) stop eating pasta
3) stop eating rice
4) stop eating peanuts/beans
5) stop eating sugar

replace everything above with fruit and animal protein (NOT soy). If you do this for 80% of your meals you'll see your excess fat, esp in the stomach area disappear.

Don't forget about alcohol. I've lost a lot by doing what you mentioned above, but would have lost much more if I didn't like beer so much, lol.

Love handles is just excess fat - end of story.

You need to do more cardiovascular exercise or areobic exercise
Some weight training would also be good
You need to clean up your diet removing as many saturates, sugars, high fatty and high cholestoral foods as possible
Clean up your lifestyle

First, it's impossible to lose fat from a specific area. Your body has to burn through its total fat together. So thinking there is an exercise to target your flanks (love handles) is a myth.

Secondly, you can do a hundred different kinds of sit ups every day of the week, but if you're not losing fat, it wont make a difference. Sit ups tone the muscle, if there's still fat on top, the muscle will just make the fat stick out more and look worse. We all, every person on the planet, has a six pack underneath, most of us just have some layer of fat on top.

Third, the body knows to store fat for emergency situations and other reasons. On women, it's their thighs. For men, you guessed it, it's our flanks (love handles). So, you could do tons of cardio, zero out your carbs, and lead a healthy and active lifestyle for years, and still not lose the fat on your love handles, as it is usually the last place the body stores fat for men. Having that said, some people have better genetics than others and may lose it more quickly. I, for example, can't seem to lose enough weight or tone my flanks enough to get rid of my love handles, but, I don't store weight in the front. So I've never had a "gut" or a "belly". In fact, even though there's a little fat on top, you can still see my abs poke through. My love handles on the other hand, are grotesque.

So, if you find that no matter how much cardio you do, or how well you maintain your diet you still have the pudge on the sides, sadly, you might need to turn to cosmetic surgery. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Like I said (and you can research it if you want to) the love handles are you usually the last place your body will store its fat resources. Most guys would have to get down to 0%-2% body fat to make them go away. So getting a little suction would be cheaper, easier, and quite frankly, healthier. Body fat percentages that low aren't good for you. So look into it. To do just your flanks would only cost around 2.5MKW - 3.5MKW. Not that much when you consider the benefits you'll have after.

Exactly. It's certainly not a healthy spot to be in, but it may be the level you have to be in to get rid of the love handles. Remember, it's the last place male bodies burn fat. The gut and thighs are usually first. Then the back, then finally the flanks.

But low body fat doesn't have to go hand in hand with bodybuilding. A lot of fitness models and models in general get their body fat down that low. Marathon runners, track and field athletes, and swimmers get it that low too. The point I was trying to make is that sit ups are going to do it for him. Fat loss has to come first. If you never did a sit up in your life, but got your body fat down low enough, you would have a bulging six pack and trim love handles.

I sometimes like to use the photo when people want to lose their love handles. In the move The Machinist, Christian Bale had to lose an unhealthy amount of weight. Some of it was camera tricks and computers, but he also did it the hard way and lost tons of weight on his on. If you see here http://img.listal.com/image/402676/600full-the-machinist-photo.jpg he got incredibly thin, but still had some fat on his love handles. That's just how it is, it's going to be the hardest place to lose from and the last place you'll see progress from. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but even if you get super thin, they may still be there. That's why many men take liposuction into consideration. It's one of the top procedures men do.

Life without bread, rice or pasta is not a life worth living.

You really do not need to cut these things out. You just need to practice moderation and exercise. I'm fairly cut and I eat bread every day and rice or pasta pretty much every day as well. Not a LOT of these things, obviously, because I'm not eating like someone fattening themselves up for Thanksgiving, but there's no way in hell I'd ever cut them out of my diet. That's just wrong.
