I first heard this tune when it first came out - I was a young 'un. My parents would hum the tune from the car radio(they couldn't sing the lyrics, natch).

Many decades later, I was a second yr. JET when the song suddenly came on the radio from a Japanese station. The nostalgia, plus the fact that I was in Japan, hit me like a sudden downpour.

Sakamoto's life was cut short in the '80s in a horrific plane crash. A Tokyo-Osaka flight crashed into a mountain.

I believe (Japanese speakers may correct me if I'm wrong) it means something like, "I hold my head up when I walk". There was a Japanese movie decades ago, about a prison break, in which it was the theme song.

I remember hearing that the crash in which Kyu Sakamoto was killed was the worst in history.
