Not surprising for an artist with wide literary interests, Barber found initial inspiration in a passage from Vergil's Georgics describing how a rivulet gradually becomes a large river. Although the idea doesn't limit the Adagio's emotional meaning, you can see how it influences the overall shape of the work a long arch beginning quietly, gradually building to an overwhelming climax, and winding down to a quiet end. Barber constructs the long-lined, spiralling theme from musical sequence that is, a group of notes is repeated slightly higher (as in this case) or lower. |

| Usually something quite heavy: Converge, (early) Cave In or Dillinger Escape Plan. Sometimes I might listen to Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake or Neil Young. |

I move to korea on tuesday - and i've had this stuck in my head as i say goodbye to my friends. So its always going to remind me of the amazing people i am leaving in ireland

if you follow the lyrics ... some of the parts just make me think of all the stupid and self-destructive things i did following a pretty bleak period in my life. It gets alot of airplay anytime i feel terrible - its a great song and a warning to not let myself get that messed up again

one of my greatest friendships was made over tom waits..... |
