I've got a little Asus Aspire One and most of the time we get along fabulously. HOWEVER, as it's a netbook there's obviously no internal DVD drive so I have to use an external one. No worries, I got the asus external drive free when I purchased the netbook. Everything was great UNTIL. . .
The damn thing began refusing to play DVDs. It says there are 'missing codecs' even on a DVD that it played quite happily the previous day.
I have installed the lastest version of Windows Media Player and still no joy. So is the problem with the external drive or with my media software and how can I fix it? |

Windows Media Player is next to useless.
Follow Beaver's advice.
I use VLC and PowerDVD 8.
I almost never use WMP. It always seems to not have the codecs. |

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I agree wholeheartedly that WMP is useless. I also have the Gom player but get the same message about codecs when I try to use it. Tried PowerDVD too but, suprise surprise, once again got the same message. This is all with a DVD that it played the previous night. WTF?
Could I have some kind of Codec-Destroying Virus? (Please don't laugh if this idea is reediculous, I'm not so well versed about computers!) Do you think the problem lies with my software or could it be with the external hard-drive? |

Is it the same with all DVD's?
Your external DVD-drive might not be reading correctly if it's the same with all DVD's.
You could uninstall all media player software then try installing only one, I recommend VLC, to be sure there are no codec conflicts.
In the old days we used to install codec-packs to get all our various kinds of files to play.......but now players like VLC, GOM, PowerDVD etc all have the latest codecs built in. |

Honestly I don't know why your codecs suddenly stopped working if they were fine before.
Does this just happen on your DVD's or video files on your hard drive?
Is it specific DVD's or all of them?
Try install CCC Codec Pack, it's what I use on my computer and it runs everything fine on WMP.

Often if the file is corrupt you will get a codec error message. I get this quite often when I accidentally run a file that hasn't finished downloading. I guess that would most likely means somehow all you're discs got scratched up at once or the DVD drive is on the blink. |
